Class AAAAA Playoff Preview

Each day this week, we'll look at the playoff draw for one of the five classifications, starting today with Class AAAAA. Here are five interesting facts about each of the 16 games, with an emphasis on playoff history. One intriguing game matches a school that is 0-6 all-time in the state playoffs against one trying to break a 14-game postseason losing streak dating to 1959. Do you know which game? Find out below.

Favorite: Camden County

Best draw: Walton

Worst draw: Stephenson

Sleeper: Brookwood

Best first-round matchup: Brookwood at Peachtree Ridge

North Cobb (5-5) at Camden County (10-0)

- North Cobb has lost 11 consecutive postseason games, last winning in 1979. North Cobb's last state-playoff victory came in 1959 against Dade in the Class C semifinals. It also was 1959 when North Cobb most recently played in south Georgia. North Cobb lost at Hawkinsville 6-0 in the final that year.

- North Cobb is making its first playoff appearance since 2007, when the Warriors were 10-0 and ranked No. 1 but lost in the first round to Peachtree Ridge 35-28.

- Camden County is ranked No. 1 entering the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Camden won the title in 2009 (its third state championship since 2003) and lost in the second round to Hillgrove in 2010. The No. 1-ranked team in the highest class is 20-1 in the first round since 1990, when the playoffs expanded to 16 from eight teams.

- Camden County tied a state record for points in a season with 549 (matched by 2005 Dublin) and leads AAAAA in scoring offense (54.9) and scoring defense (6.0).

- This will be the first time these schools have met in football.

Centennial (5-5) at Marietta (5-5)

- Marietta is 29-26 all-time in the postseason. Centennial is 2-3.

- Centennial is seeking its first playoff victory since a 42-12 victory over Lithonia in the 2002 first round. Marietta is seeking its first playoff victory since a 19-3 win over Woodstock in the 2005 first round.

- This is the only first-round game in AAAAA between teams that did not make the playoffs last season. Marietta was 2-8, Centennial 5-5.

- Centennial started 1-4, its fourth loss a 70-20 embarrassment to West Forsyth, but finished out 4-1. Marietta started 0-4 and finished out 5-1.

- This will be the first time these schools have met in football.

Archer (5-5) at North Gwinnett (9-1)

- North Gwinnett needs a victory to earn its sixth consecutive 10-win season. Only five Georgia programs have achieved that in the highest classification. They are Camden County (2001-11), Northside (1998-2003), Parkview (1999-2005), Valdosta (1986-92) and Warner Robins (1979-85).

- Archer, which opened in 2009, is the first Gwinnett County school to reach the state playoffs in the highest classification by its third season.

- North Gwinnett reached the playoffs in its fourth season (1964) but didn't win a playoff game until 1996.

- North Gwinnett's best state finish was to the finals in 2007. The Bulldogs reached the quarterfinals in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

- This will be the first time these schools have met in football.

East Coweta (7-3) at Colquitt County (8-2)

- Colquitt County is 38-22 all-time in the postseason (counting games from Moultrie High) and leads Class AAAAA in playoff victories the past two seasons with seven while reaching the semifinals (2009) and final (2010).

- Colquitt County has played the most games (eight) and scored the most victories (six) against playoff teams among AAAAA playoff qualifiers.

- East Coweta has made the state playoffs each season since 1997, which is the second-longest streak in the highest classification behind Camden County's streak that started in 1992. East Coweta's playoff record is 12-21.

- East Coweta has lost its past eight road games in the playoffs, including a 31-19 loss to Lowndes last year.

- These schools have met in football once, with Colquitt winning 24-19 in the 1994 Class AAAA quarterfinals on the way to the Packers' only state title.

Collins Hill (5-5) at Grayson (10-0)

- Grayson is the only school that has reached the Class AAAAA quarterfinals each of the past four seasons. Camden County, Newnan and North Gwinnett failed last season after achieving it the three previous seasons.

- Grayson is 5-0 in first-round playoff games since moving to AAAAA in 2004.

- Collins Hill has advanced in the playoffs only three times since 2001 but made the semifinals two of those times - in 2001 and 2010, winning five road games in those two underdog seasons.

- Collins Hill is 0-5 against playoff teams. Milton (0-4) and Archer (0-3) among AAAAA playoff teams also are winless against other playoff teams.

- Grayson leads the series between these Gwinnett County schools 3-2. They last met in 2008, with Grayson winning 31-7 in the first round.

Lowndes (7-3) at Stephenson (9-1)

- Lowndes is 22-5 in the playoffs under Randy McPherson, who came to Lowndes in 2002, and has won its past seven first-round games. The most recent first-round loss also was the most recent first-round game on the road. Lowndes was beaten by Lovejoy 43-3 in 2002.

- Lowndes' most recent trip to Hallford Stadium, Stephenson's most common home field, for a playoff game came in 1999. Lowndes defeated Southwest DeKalb 28-27 in the quarterfinals and went on to win a state title.

- Stephenson has reached the playoffs each season since 2000 and is 7-4 in the first round, 13-11 overall in playoff games.

- Stephenson is 1-5 all-time against Region 1-AAAAA's four playoff teams, losing to Lowndes, Valdosta, Colquitt County and Coffee at least once each.

- Lowndes is 8-0 all-time against DeKalb County schools and has beaten Stephenson twice, winning 43-7 in the 2004 second round and 14-0 in the 2005 semifinals at the Georgia Dome. Lowndes won state championships each of those seasons.

Beach (5-5) at Hillgrove (10-0)

- This is Beach's first state playoff appearance. Beach, a Savannah school, is 1-4 in region playoff games, all played from 1988 to 1993.

- This will be Beach's first football game played north of Macon since the 1960s, when Beach played at Herndon Stadium (Morris Brown College) to play Atlanta city schools during segregation.

- Hillgrove is the first Cobb County school to make the playoffs in four of its first five seasons.

- Hillgrove is 3-2 all-time in the playoffs, its best finish the quarterfinals in 2010, when Hillgrove upset No. 1-ranked Camden County in the second round.

- This will be the first time these schools have met in football.

Etowah (6-4) at West Forsyth (9-1)

- Etowah has made the playoffs in all six seasons under Stewart. Its lone playoff victory came in 2006 against Parkview. Etowah opened in 1977 and had not made the playoffs until Stewart was hired.

- This is West Forsyth's first home playoff game. Etowah has never won a road playoff game.

- West Forsyth is a five-year-old school that always has had a winning record under its only coach, Frank Hepler. This is the school's first nine-win season.

- West Forsyth has made the playoffs in both of its seasons in Class AAAAA. The Wolverines lost to South Gwinnett 31-7 last season and are seeking their first playoff victory.

- West Forsyth defeated Etowah 21-13 on Sept. 9 at Etowah. The schools also met in 2010, when Etowah won 41-14 at West Forsyth.

Lassiter (7-3) at Alpharetta (9-1)

- Alpharetta, a Fulton County school that opened in 2004, achieved its first region title and first home playoff game this year. Its previous best finishes were 6-5 in 2010 and 6-4 in 2006.

- Lassiter, a Cobb County school that opened in 1982, had not won a state playoff game until 2008 but advanced a round that year and made the quarterfinals in 2009.

- Alpharetta's offensive coordinator (Clint Woodfin) and defensive coordinator (Jeff Carlberg) were on Lassiter's staff in 2009.

- Lassiter beat Alpharetta 44-7 in 2009 and 25-22 in 2008 and leads the series 3-1.

- This is one of two first-round games in AAAAA matching teams that are scoring 30 points per game - Alpharetta at 31.1, Lassiter at 32.3. The other is Brookwood (30.4) at Peachtree Ridge (30.7).

Benedictine (5-5) at McEachern (9-1)

- McEachern is 27-23 all-time in the playoffs. Only one of those victories has come since the 2005 season.

- McEachern has stumbled early in the playoffs the past two seasons despite good records. In 2009, the Indians were 10-0 and ranked No. 6 and lost to Brookwood 20-10 in the first round. In 2010, they were 10-1 and ranked No. 4 and lost to Valdosta 31-28 in the second round. This year, they are ranked No. 6.

- Other than Camden County, schools from Region 3-AAAAA (of which Benedictine is a member and the No. 3 seed) have never won a playoff game on the road. They are 0-22.

- Benedictine, a Savannah military school, is seeking its first playoff victory since 1996, an 11-10 overtime win over Northside of Warner Robins. Benedictine has lost five straight since then.

- This will be the first time these schools have met in football.

Coffee (5-5) at M.L. King (10-0)

- M.L. King defeated Stephenson 50-49 last week to claim its third region title in history. The others came in 2007 and 2010.

- M.L. King opened in 2002 and has made the playoffs each season since 2003 and is 11-8 all-time in the state playoffs. M.L. King reached the Class AAA semifinals in 2004.

- Coffee's last trip to Hallford Stadium, M.L. King's most common home field, was in 2008, when it beat Stephenson 17-14 in overtime in the first round. Coffee has won three consecutive first-round road games.

- The teams have one common opponent. Coffee defeated Valdosta 22-17. M.L. King defeated Valdosta 16-3. Those are Valdosta's only losses during a Region 1-AAAAA championship season.

- This will be the first time these schools have met in football.

Brookwood (7-3) at Peachtree Ridge (8-2)

- Brookwood is 41-20 all-time in postseason games. The Broncos won state titles in 1996 and 2010 and reached the final in 1988, 2002 and 2005.

- Peachtree Ridge is 11-3-1 all-time in postseason games. The Lions won a state title in 2006 and were the runner-up in 2008.

- Brookwood is 0-3 playing on the road in Gwinnett County in the state playoffs with losses to Peachtree Ridge (2009), North Gwinnett (2008) and Parkview (2002).

- Peachtree Ridge is 6-0 all-time in home playoff games.

- One of these schools has represented Gwinnett County in the Class AAAAA final five of the past nine seasons, but they've played each other only once in history, playoffs or regular season. Peachtree Ridge won 21-6 in the 2009 second round.

Newnan (6-4) at Valdosta (8-2)

- Valdosta is 115-28-2 in the GHSA-run postseason (since 1948) and has captured 23 state titles overall, the last in 1998.

- Valdosta won its 35th region title this season, its first since 2003. The eight years are the longest between titles since Valdosta's first region crown in 1950. Only Lincoln County, with 36 titles, has more.

- Newnan has made the playoffs nine consecutive seasons and is 24-25 all-time in the postseason.

- Newnan's 2010 season ended in Valdosta with a 38-14 defeat against Lowndes.

- Newnan and Valdosta have played each other twice. Valdosta won 14-9 in the Class A championship game in Albany in 1951. Newnan won 28-9 in the 2009 first round in Rick Tomberlin's final game as Valdosta's head coach.

Norcross (8-2) at Dacula (7-3)

- The game between these Gwinnett County schools formerly was called the Maloof Bowl because head coaches Kevin Maloof (Dacula) and Keith Maloof (Norcross) were brothers. Kevin Malooff retired after the 2010 season. The coaches went head-to-head seven times, but never in the playoffs.

- Dacula's Jared Zito is one of four head coaches new to his school that led a team to the AAAAA playoffs. The others are Danny Britt of Benedictine, Howie DeCristofaro of Milton and Mark Fleetwood of Peachtree Ridge. None of those four schools made the playoffs in 2010.

- Dacula's best finishes are the semifinals in 1988 and 1990 in Class A and 2005 in AAAAA.

- Norcross' best finishes have been the quarterfinals in 1991 and 2006.

- Norcross defeated Dacula 35-7 in the season opener for both teams Aug. 18 but is 3-5 all-time against Dacula.

Milton (4-6) at Walton (10-0)

- Milton is the only AAAAA team in the playoffs with a losing record. Those in other classifications are LaGrange, Dalton, Commerce, Miller County and Calhoun County, all 4-6.

- Milton is 0-5 against playoff teams, 4-1 against non-playoff teams.

- Walton's best playoff finishes have been the semifinals of 2004 and 2007, both under current Ware County coach Ed Dudley.

- Walton is second in scoring offense (38.5 points per game) and third in scoring defense (9.1) in AAAAA.

- Walton has beaten Milton each of the past 11 times they've met, dating to 1995. That includes a 42-16 victory over Milton on Sept. 2.

South Cobb (7-3) at Windsor Forest (6-3-1)

- South Cobb has lost 14 consecutive postseason games. Its last victory came in 1959, a 19-7 victory over a College Park team whose most memorable player was Bill Curry.

- This will be South Cobb's first football game played south of metro Atlanta since a trip to Hardaway of Columbus in 1966.

- Windsor Forest has won six straight games. That's the eighth-longest winning streak in Class AAAAA.

- Windsor Forest is the most successful Savannah football program in 3-AAAAA, with six winning seasons and two 5-6 finishes over the past eight years. But Windsor Forest is 0-6 all-time in the state playoffs.

- This will be the first time these schools have met in football.

Trivia

Lincoln County last failed to make the state playoffs in 1981, when beaten in a Region 4-AA playoff game. What team eliminated the Red Devils? Hint: The school is located in the birth hometown of Oliver Hardy. (Answer Tuesday)

Answer to Friday's question: The two schools formed from the merger of schools that had won state titles are Rome in 1992 (from East Rome and West Rome) and North Atlanta in 1991 (from Northside and North Fulton). Neither new school has won a state title or played in a championship game.

Nominations Wanted

GHSF Daily will run its weekly Top Individual Performances on Tuesday. Please submit nominations today. Also, the Touchdown Club of Atlanta is seeking nominations for back, lineman and coach of the week. We especially need nominations for linemen. The TD Club's awarded players must be seniors who would attend Monday's luncheon in Atlanta. Respond to this e-mail (ghsfdaily@bellsouth.net) today to make nominations for either.
