Mt. Hood Lane Slalom Race 1/21/12
February 8, 2012Lakeridge High School
Mt. Hood Lane Slalom: Well, after feet of snow followed by inches of rain we were blessed to have a freeze Friday night and snow and a skiable run Saturday at Ski Bowl. Both Mt. Hood and Metro (for the second week in a row) leagues had to call off their races at Mt. Hood Meadows due to high wind shutting down chairs. And what a race it was – the term that was heard often was “rodeo” with the challenges replacing the knocked out gates and racers flying out of the ruts.
The top boys and girls finishers for Lakeridge were our club racer freshmen, Ashlay Ruddick and Maddie Lawhead. Ashlay started at the back of the pack in the team’s sixth spot and took 12th in the first run and 5th in the second run for a seventh overall position. Joining him to propel the boys to a second place finish were Riley Shearer in 9th and Doug Taylor in 12th. Maddie built on her strong finish (and athlete of the week honor) from last week coming in second overall in the girl’s varsity race. With help from Evan Heath (17th), Lauren McIver (20th) and Emily Harrell, the girls moved up to third this week.
The Girls JV took third led by Captain Lizzie Aronson (3rd), with Sophie Richards (15th), Marieke Sawka (16th) and Allie Douglas contributing. The boy’s course was especially difficult running after the varsity rodeo and only half of the field completed two clean runs. The Lakeridge Boys JV team took second, with Michael Ashworth (2nd), Jack Weary (3rd), Brandon Kuhnert (4th) and Nick Trofgruben all contributing. As always, complete race results can be found at www.ski3rivers.org.
This week brings the first FreeStyle event Friday night at Mt. Hood Meadows - a Slope Style Competition followed by a Giant Slalom race at Ski Bowl on Saturday.
