After using a strong defensive effort to dispatch Central-Carroll 43-33 Thursday in the semifinals of the Region 6-AAA tournament, the Lady Grangers (20-2) will play for the region championship Saturday against Carrollton. The championship showdown is set for 6 p.m. at LaGrange High. LaGrange won both regular-season meetings between the teams. Against Central, the Lady Grangers used what head coach Jan Jones called "a pretty good defensive game for us," to avenge their only region loss of the season. "Both teams just played really good defense tonight and it was hard to get a score and just tough to get a basket," Jones added. After building a 10-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Grangers got their offensive working a bit more smoothly in the second period to take a 25-11 lead at the half. Central fought back in the third period to get within five with a minute remaining, but the Lady Grangers clamped down defensively in the fourth quarter to win comfortably. After going 5-for-17 from the free-thow line for the first three quarters, the Lady Grangers made 8-of-10 free throws in the fourth period. "Central is a hard team to match up with and defend because they are big, so they are a hard team to defend," Jones said. "I thought that we handled it pretty well and just played scrappy and were able to come away with the win. We hit our free throws down the stretch when we needed to, and that really helped us out." The Lady Grangers were led offensively by sophomore guard Brittany Tatum, who had 11 of her team-leading 20 points in the second half. "We came out slow, but after the (first quarter) I really think that we were able to pull away and we never looked back," she said. "Our defense was really good for us tonight." Senior Terryuana Godwin also had a big night with 16 points, and Steara Mitchell added six points. Read more: La Grange News - Lady Grangers earn title shot
