Lady Grangers Defeat Callaway At Philips Arena
January 9, 2011Lagrange High School
Before the LaGrange Lady Grangers and Callaway Lady Cavaliers took the floor at Philips Arena Monday afternoon they were told the same thing by their coaches.
Just have fun.
Of course, both coaches wanted a win, but they also wanted their teams to relish the opportunity that they had been given.
"I told them right before we came out on the court that of course we want a win, and we are looking to do it the right way, but just enjoy it," LaGrange head coach Jan Jones said. "They are stepping on the court where a lot of big names have stepped before, so I was just throwing it out there to let them know how fortunate they were to have this opportunity and be able to be a part of this game."
Callaway head coach Michael Fannin said that the opportunity to play a game at Philips Arena, where the NBA's Atlanta Hawks and the NHL's Atlanta Trashers play, was a one in a million opportunity for his team.
"It was mind boggling," Fannin said. "For the girls to be able to come out here and play on a court like this is a great thing."
In a rematch of last week's game against Callaway, the Lady Grangers dominated on the big stage of Philips Arena.
Riding a dominant offensive effort led by sophomore shooting guard Brittany Tatum, who had a game-high 16 points, the LaGrange Lady Grangers cruised to a 67-18 victory..
For Tatum it was her second time being able to play on the court after playing this summer with her AAU team, but this time was a little more special because it allowed her to share it with here fellow Lady Grangers.
"It felt really great," Tatum said. "It was just a great experience to be able to share this experience with my teammates, and I'm glad we got the win to. Its really great."
After scoring the game's first basket, the Lady Grangers never looked back.
Jumping out to a 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Grangers opened up an offensive blitzkrieg, netting 22 points to take a 40-8 lead into the half.
It was more of the same in the second half, as the Lady Grangers outscored the Lady Cavs 18-2 in the third quarter to ice the game.
"I was really proud of the team tonight," Jones said. "I think they had a lot of fun and you could see it out there while they were playing.
Said Fannin: "They were overwhelmed. I think with this atmosphere and playing on such a big stage everything just got to them."
But, the coach added "they played hard and they had a good time."
Terryuana Godwin contributed 13 points for LaGrange, Breanna Grant had 11, and Samantha Cotton scored eight.
