Avon's inside game overcomes Lafayette Jeff
February 17, 2014Lafayette Jefferson High School
Missing just one shot from the field in the fourth quarter, Avon rallied to defeat Lafayette Jeff 56-50 in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference boys basketball game Friday night.
The Orioles (7-9) were 7 of 8 in the fourth quarter, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range, to erase the Bronchos’ 40-36 lead. Avon was shooting 40 percent from the field during the first three quarters but hung in thanks to a big night on the boards from Logan White. White pulled down 15 rebounds to help the Orioles finish with a 35-29 edge.
Another advantage Avon exploited was 6-foot-4 Connor Funkhauser. Standing four inches taller than any Broncho, the senior center had 16 points. Lafayette Jeff had just 12 points in the paint.
Lafayette Jeff (4-11) bounced back from 17.6 percent first-quarter shooting to forge a 26-26 tie at halftime. But the Bronchos endured another cold snap in the final eight minutes, making just 3 of 12.
Sophomore Darian Collins’ 14 points led three players in double figures for Lafayette Jeff. Quarin Hood added 13 points, and freshman guard David Haynard contributed 11 points to go along with a game-high six assists.
The Bronchos are right back in action Saturday night at West Lafayette, hoping to avenge last season’s 60-50 defeat.
