Logansport withstands Lafayette Jeff's comeback attempts

January 9, 2014
Lafayette Jefferson High School

Lafayette Jeff fell behind early and could never quite catch up to Logansport on Friday night in a 63-55 loss. Jeff coach Scott Radeker said if his squad would have done the little things better, it might not have had such a steep hill to climb. The Bronchos (2-6) trailed 30-16 late in the first half before getting to within 32-26 at halftime. They trailed 44-30 late in the third quarter but sliced the lead to one midway through the fourth before the Berries (7-1) pulled away. “I thought we made a nice run at the end of the first half,” Radeker said. “We came out and got the ball where we wanted in the second half and got to the free throw line. Free throw shooting was big for us tonight (5 of 15), and a lot of bunnies around the rim that we missed were big for us, too.” Fullcourt pressure helped the Bronchos open the fourth with an 11-2 run to pull within 46-45 on Darian Collins’ 3-pointer from the left wing with 4:35 left in the game. But the Berries got the ball back inside and freshman Jalen Adaway converted a three-point play to push their lead back up to four. Dan Ricksey’s basket cut the lead to 51-47 with 3:00 remaining. Two free throws from Carter Skaggs pushed Logansport’s lead back to six. Lafayette Jeff then had a possession where it missed four shots. Logansport’s A.J. Smith was fouled on a rebound attempt and hit 1 of 2 free throws to push the lead to 54-47. Devin Haney scored to pull the Bronchos back within five, but an Adaway dunk, his third of the game, off a press breaker made it a seven-point game. Once more, the Bronchos charged back, with a Haney 3-pointer that made it 56-52 with 43 seconds left. With a five-point lead, Logansport hit six consecutive free throws in the final 23 seconds before Haney hit a 3 at the buzzer. “I’m proud of our kids’ effort to stay around,” Radeker said. “We got down big twice, and we battled back and had it back to a one-point game and couldn’t get over the hump and couldn’t make a winning play. That’s disappointing, but there were some positives in the game. You’ve got to hit layups inside and you’ve got to hit free throws.” Haney led the Bronchos with 20 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Freshman David Hanyard scored 16 points. Collins and Quarin Hood each added seven. “Two good teams playing. Throw the record out — I think our team is going to be there at the end,” Radeker said. “We’ll be all right. But they’ve got a nice team. They played a great game tonight.” Skaggs led the Berries with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The 6-5 junior entered averaging over 3.5 made 3-pointers per game and shooting 48 percent from beyond the arc but was held to 0 of 2 for the game. But he was 6 of 11 inside the arc and made all six of his free throws, as the Berries made 18 of 25 free throws for the game. Adaway contributed 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Andrew Wamsley had 10 points and 11 boards, and freshman Matt Jennings added nine points. “They played a great game,” Radeker said. “They got the ball inside early and Skaggs did a good job of hitting a turnaround jumper in the post. I thought we did a good job on him on the perimeter. I thought our pressure got to them a little bit when we were able to make the run. But early in the game, I thought those freshmen did a nice job getting to the right spots against the press and finishing around the basket.” Logansport coach Pat Skaggs thought his team got too impatient against Jeff’s pressure after building the double-digit leads. “I don’t think we showed patience or didn’t have the ball movement or the screening or the hard cuts that we had in the first quarter,” he said. “Not taking anything away from Jeff — we knew they were going to battle and they have a solid team. Their record is very deceiving. They’re quick, and coach Radeker does a great job. We knew we were going to have our hands full, and fortunately for us, we did hit some free throws late.”
