Metzinger's 3-pointer rallies Central Catholic past Lafayette Jeff in J&C Hoops Classic

One dribble, take a look and let it fly.

Those were Dave Barrett’s instructions to Central Catholic’s Pete Metzinger with 2.5 seconds left in Monday’s J&C Hoops Classic at the Crawley Center.

That’s all the Knights could hope for in this last-second desperate situation, down by two points to Lafayette Jeff as this high-drama matchup unfolded between these two city rivals.

Metzinger’s storybook game ended in stunning fashion as the senior drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving Class A No. 2 Central Catholic a thrilling 57-56 victory over the Bronchos.

“When I let it go, I thought it was short. Our one time all year to beat Jeff and we slipped up. But it ended up going in,” Metzinger said.

It set off a wild celebration as the Knights’ student body rushed the floor and mobbed Metzinger and his teammates.

The final play was a result of Darian Collins making the second of a two-shot free throw attempt, extending Jeff’s lead to 56-54. Nick Thompson inbounded the ball to Mitch Witteveen, who passed it to Metzinger.

“We put that play in to beat their press, Barrett said. “We were getting the ball to halfcourt all night. That’s the quickest way to get it there. I didn’t want to call a timeout and let them set their D.”

The final shot capped a brilliant game for Metzinger.

He finished with 28 points, scoring all of CC’s 12 in the fourth quarter. His 3-pointer with 3.5 seconds on the clock brought the Knights within 55-54.

“He hit some big shots in the fourth,” Jeff coach Scott Radeker said. “The big possession was the possession before that when we gave up the 3 to cut it to one. An O-board and they got a 3-point opportunity. You’ve got to come up with those rebounds. He hit some tough shots.”

All of this from Metzinger, who missed most of last season with a broken elbow but returned to play in the sectional. As of a couple of weeks ago, he wasn’t shooting the ball well in practice. Barrett decided to bring the 5-foot-10 Metzinger off the bench for CC’s first game of the season Monday.

He scored 13 of his team’s 33 first-half points and totaled 15 of the Knights’ 24 after halftime. Overall, Metzinger connected on 10 of 14 field goals, including 6 of 10 from 3-point range.

“It was awesome,” Metzinger said. “My first few shots didn’t go in and then I shot another one and it went in. My confidence was high and I was feeling great.”

Metzinger admitted he was a little upset for not being in the starting lineup, but “I came off the bench and did what I had to do. Coach told me to be ready right away. I was as ready as I could be.”

The undersized Bronchos (1-1) battled the bigger Knights (1-0) all night. Freshman David Haynard showed plenty of promise, scoring 17 first-half points en route to a team-high 21. His three-point play — a scoop and score — gave Jeff a 53-51 lead with 2:50 to play.

“He’s a special player,” Radeker said of Haynard. “He has a bright future. It’s all a learning experience for our team. This is going to be a great one of us. We have a lot of situations we can show them on tape and how we might handle it differently the next time.”

However, Radeker isn’t sure what the Bronchos could’ve done differently on the last play.

“We can’t foul. We wanted to be there and make them take a tough shot. He did take it and it was a tough shot. They only had 2.5 seconds. We had a guy there, but we can’t foul and hope it doesn’t go in at that point,” Radeker said.
