Harrison, McCutcheon draw boys basketball sectional opener at Lafayette Jeff
February 18, 2013Lafayette Jefferson High School
or the second straight season, Harrison and McCutcheon will open Class 4A, Sectional 7 play against each other.
But unlike last season, fans of the Tippecanoe School Corp. rivals can cheer for their team without leaving the county.
Lafayette Jeff’s Crawley Center will host that 4A sectional for the first time since 2009, and the Raiders and Mavericks learned Sunday they will meet for the third time this season on the tournament’s opening night.
“When we played in the semifinals of the J&C (Hoops Classic), it was an unbelievable atmosphere,” Harrison coach Mark Rinehart said. “We’re hoping for something similar.”
Pairings for the 103rd annual boys basketball state tournament were drawn Sunday morning at the IHSAA offices in Indianapolis and broadcast Sunday evening. Tournament play begins Feb. 26.
Dates and times for all tournament games will be announced this week.
McCutcheon defeated Harrison 50-44 in the J&C Hoops Classic semifinals on Nov. 30 and 54-40 in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference game on Dec. 14. The winner of teams’ third meeting plays Logansport in the semifinals.
McCutcheon also defeated Harrison 54-49 in last year’s sectional opener at Kokomo. The teams have played in three of the last four sectionals.
“I think Harrison has gotten better, but I think we have too,” McCutcheon coach Rick Peckinpaugh said. “I think you throw out what happened before, early in the year before Christmas, and see how the teams are playing now.”
