Lafayette Jeff on a roll entering baseball sectional opener
May 23, 2012Lafayette Jefferson High School
The Lafayette Jeff baseball team that takes the field to begin defense of its sectional championship today bears little resemblance to last spring’s trophy-winning squad.
Only a handful of the current Bronchos were on the sectional roster, and only Peter Ripke and Keaton Hamilton saw significant time.
Jeff’s young squad went through some growing pains, but coach Scott McTagertt believes his team is headed in the right direction entering the Class 4A, Sectional 7 opener against Marion at Loeb Stadium.
“If you had asked me a couple of weeks ago I wouldn’t have said we were playing that great, but I think the best baseball we’ve played all year has been the last two weeks of the season,” McTagertt said.
Harrison (8-20) plays Kokomo (13-15) in tonight’s other semifinal.
McTagertt said pitching, led by Ripke and Griff Clark, has always been a strength, but the Broncho bats have come to life recently. Austin Albrecht boasts a .471 on-base percentage at the top of the lineup, and Ripke provides a .571 slugging percentage in the middle.
“We feel pretty good about ourselves,” McTagertt said. “We’ve still got to perform. We’ve got to get the job done.”
Harrison closed the regular season with a 14-2 victory at Benton Central. Nick Bartolone went 5-for-5 with two homers and seven RBIs.
