Jeff-Marion outcome could hinge on 3-point shooting

Lafayette Jefferson High SchoolLafayette Jeff's basketball résumé does not look impressive on paper.
But coach Geoff Salmon has seen vast improvements from the Bronchos this season and his senior-led squad is coming off some good practices.
Salmon hopes that translates to the floor at Logansport's Berry Bowl in the first round of the Class 4A, Sectional 7 tournament against Marion.
"As a whole, we've improved a lot," Salmon said. "Kelsey Simms, for example, is one of the most improved kids we've had on our team."
The Bronchos battled suspensions early and started 3-11. Jeff followed that up with a three-game winning streak against Kokomo, Harrison and West Lafayette before running into Class 4A No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern.
Tonight, the Bronchos will face another challenge in Marion senior Laura Friday.
"Friday is a very good player, one of the best shooters we've faced this year," Salmon said.
Friday is shooting nearly 33 percent from 3-point range. Marion also has a handful of players who are between 5-foot-10 and 6-1.
The Bronchos' strength has been in 3-point shooting.
Simms, Lindsay Fox, Jenni Graham and Erin West all average at least one made 3-pointer per game. Since returning in January from suspension, Fox is making nearly half of her attempts from beyond the arc. Following a slow start to the season, Simms has become one of the area's top shooters from 3-point range.
"They've all stepped up," Salmon said. "Lindsay, she is about 48 percent from 3, but she's got to be more active and make things happen. Kelsey's got to continue to shoot well and (point guard) Krissy (Bruce) has to play great.
"Krissy's got to get some deflections and steals and make sure we get the ball where it needs to be. If she can do that, we will be fine."
