Get to Know Coach Katie and Coach Clay

We are pleased to welcome Coach Katie Sallee and Coach Clay Sutherland to the Lafayette Swim Team!
Head Coach Katie Sallee
Coach Katie started her swimming career in Chattanooga, TN at the age of 7. She swam for Stuart Heights (summer league) for 12 straight years, where she went on to coach multiple age groups. At age 8, she began her USA Swimming career at Scenic City Aquatic Club, where she swam for 10 years. While at SCAC, she also swam for her high school (Girls Preparatory School), where she was a team captain, a three time All-American, and a Tennessee State Champion in the 200 free relay. After high school, Coach Katie moved to Lexington to attend Transylvania University, where she swam and majored in Studio Art. During her four years at Transylvania, she was 3rd place in the 400 IM at the NAIA National Championships, garnering All American honors, as well as being an all-conference performer each year. While at Transylvania, she also was on four record breaking relays, helping Transy capture multiple conference titles. Currently, she lives in Lexington with her husband John and two sons, Jack (7) and Ben (2). Katie is entering her third season as a coach for Colonel Aquatics in Richmond, Kentucky and is looking forward to a great year at Lafayette.
Assistant Coach Clay Sutherland
Coach Clay began swimming summer league for the Andover Mudcats and the Lansdowne Gators from the age of 6 to 17. During this time he also swam for Highbridge Aquatics (USA swim club) for 9 years and four years of high school at Henry Clay. While attending college at Eastern Kentucky University, Clay served as an assistant coach for the Georgetown Stingrays, taught private swim lessons, and was the assistant coach for Colonel Aquatics as well as the Model Patriots. In graduate school at EKU, he served as a Graduate Assistant for the Aquatics Department, teaching a college swim class, as well as helping supervise and run the university’s lifeguard staff. Coach Clay earned his bachelor’s degree in Middle Grades Education, Math and Science. He also earned his Graduate Degree in Educational Leadership from EKU. He currently teaches 6th, 7th and 8th grade mathematics at Morton Middle School in Lexington.
