40th Annual Apple Invitational Girls' Field Hockey Tournament

Louisville, KY -- A back to school, long standing community-wide event, the 40th annual girls high school field hockey Apple Invitational Tournament has expanded to include out-of-state varsity girls filed hockey teams. Varsity will compete in two pool brackets: “the Green Apple” and “the Red Apple” for the coveted championship medals.

The Green Apple Championship game will be played on Horton Field at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, August 25. The Red Apple Championship game will be played on Horton Field at 2:30 p.m., Sunday August 26.
SHA Varsity coach and Field Hockey Coordinator Liz Lewis' freshman, JV and Varsity teams all won their respective divisions of the tournament in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, the SHA Valkyries won the JV division, and Assumption was runner up. In the Freshman division, Assumption was the champion, with SHA as runner up. The Valkyries varsity squad has won the tournament the past eight years.
The tournament is the longest running event of its kind in Kentuckiana area. The Apple Tournament was first held in 1973 in honor of the 100th anniversary of field hockey being introduced in the U.S.A. by Constance Applebee. Bunny Daugherty, a long time coach at Sacred Heart Academy, worked to establish positive athletic opportunities for girls in a number of sports and is credited with starting the Apple Tournament. A standout coach at Sacred Heart, Daugherty was one of the most respected champions for girls'/women's athletics not only regionally but nationally as well. There will be a Celebration of the 40th Apple Invitational Tournament on Saturday, August 25 at 5 pm on Horton Field for all past players and coaches.

Event: Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville, Kentucky has hosted the pre-season Apple Tournament for local high school girls’ field hockey teams for the past 39 years. Last year we expanded and re-branded our event, the Apple Invitational, to include out of state high school teams. The Apple Tournament was first held in the fall of 1973 in honor of the 100th anniversary of field hockey being introduced in the U.S.A. by Constance Applebee. It began with only Varsity teams from the Louisville area and has grown to include Junior Varsity and Freshman divisions and varsity teams from out of town.

Format: Pool play with crossover semi-final and final games to determine overall winner. Games will be 11v11 and played on three fields simultaneously, one turf and two grass. Games are 60 minutes running clock with 5-minute half - time and 10 minutes transition.
Schedule: Friday: 4:30pm – 8:30pm
Saturday: 9:00am – 8:15pm
Sunday: 12:30pm – 3:30pm
