Directions and Start Times for Away CC Meets/Invites
September 14, 2012By Tim Adams of Kankakee Valley High School
NCC Double Dual at Andrean (Hidden Lake Park, Merrillville)
Meet time: Tuesday, September 4th, 2012 at 5:00pm. Anticipate boys to run first.
To get to Hidden Lake Park, take I-65 north to the 61st street exit in Merrillville. Head west on 61st to Broadway. Turn south (left). Take what appears to be the first left (east). If you hit the RR tracks, you have gone too far.
LAFAYETTE MCCUTCHEON MAVERICK INVITE
Meet time: Girls' race 1st @ 8:00 our time (CST). Boys' race to follow. A reserve race has been added this year.
Parents, family, and fans, please ask your runner where he or she would like you to be along the course. We'd like then to anticipate seeing you at a particular point as part of the mental racing strategy to keep them alert and thinking as they race. This course is reasonable spectator-friendly...meaning that one can take in much of the race without moving much...and a decent amount of the race with a bit more walking.
See map for visual and driving directions. Click "My Places" and select the McCutcheon Invite. This invite is located on the south side of Lafayette, Indiana.
NCC Championship Meet
This meet will be hosted this year by Hobart. While we are still awaiting confirmation, I assume that their course is located at the same site that we visited last year. See this link for a map.
From Hwy 30 (approx 3.5 miles east of the I65/30 exchange) turn north on 51 (Grand Blvd). Travel about .5 miles. I believe that you should cross railroad tracks. Immediately after the tracks, turn right (east) onto Ainsworth Rd. Follow Ainsworth approximately .5 miles to the entrance to the park.
Parking may not be plentiful; carpooling may be helpful.
We are still awaiting a map of the course.
Boys' varsity = 10:00
Girls' varsity = 10:40
Reserve race = approx 11:20
Runners should report to the HS by 7:50am, Saturday, October 1, 2011.
HIGHLAND HIGH SCHOOL
The Highland HS Invitational is located on the HS grounds and the walking path that runs SE from the HS.
To get to Highland, head north on I65. Get off at 61st street. Take 61st west to Taft/Cleveland.
Turn right (north) and travel to 45th (which is at a stop light). Turn left (west). NOTE: This road does run through a depressed neighborhood. You will run into a handful of stop signs on this bumpy road.
Take 45th to 5th street. Turn right into this residential area and follow it to 41st. The HS rear parking lot will lie straight ahead, but be prepared to park elsewhere, such as in front of the school (left, west).
The course starts north of the tennis courts and then follows counter clockwise around the school property. It will then run alongside the west side of the Erie Lackawana Trail, loop around, and head back on the east side. The course finishes by running behind the visitor section of the track, around the north side of the HS, and then enters the north side of the track, leaving runners 300m (clockwise) to finish on the track at the 50 yard line.
NOTE THE ORDER OF RACES:
9:00 Boys JV
9:30 Boys Varsity
10:00 Girls Varsity*
10:45 Girls JV*
11:30 Presentation of Awards (at football field bleachers)
NEW PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL
This course is the site of the NP Invitational as well as regional and semi-state competitons. By car, expect about a trip of about 1:15.
Travel north to Valparaiso. Take 2 to Westville. Continue north on 2/421 until the next stop light, where 2 peals off right (east). Take Hwy 2 through LaPorte. Continue east until Hwy 2 meets Hwy 20. Take the ramp right (you are staying on 2). Travel about 1.75 miles to a flashing light atop a hill. You should see a sign pointing left to NPHS. Gauge the westbound traffic coming over the hill before you cross.
NOTE FOR 2011: Supposedly Hwy 2 is closed west of LaPorte.
Option 1: Travel to Westville. At Hwy 2 and 6, turn right onto 6 and then left onto 421. Across from the Subway/DQ/Fagens plaza, turn right. You will pass Westville HS. At some point, this is Joliet Road. Continue east. The road is curvy and features 1 stop sign and one small hamlet.
You come out onto Hwy 39. Turn left and travel to Hwy 2. Turn right and continue through LaPorte and as indicated above.
Option 2: Travel to Valpo. Head east on Hwy 30 until you reach Hwy 39. Turn left. Travel to Hwy 6. Turn right to Hwy 35. Travel about 9 miles to a stop light. Turn right onto Boyd Blvd. This road is a sort of "by pass" around the SE side of LaPorte. You have a stop light and a few stop signs. It comes out on the east side of LP near the Walmart. Turn right onto Hwy 2 and continue to NP.
GRIFFITH HOME COURSE @ OAK RIDGE PRAIRIE
Griffith's course is a Oak Ridge Prairie Park, located south of the Griffith-Merrilville airport. After polling several people and trying two routes on the bus, the best route appears as follows:
I65 to 61st street (first interchange north of Hwy 30). Turn left (west). Travel until the road Ts into Cleveland at a stoplight. Turn right (north) until the next stop light. Turn left (west) onto 73rd. Note that this is largely a well-traveled residential street with one stop sign until you T into a 4 way stop at Chase St. Turn north and travel 2 stop signs to 53rd (eventually called Main Street). Turn west on Main and travel to the stop light at Colfax. Turn left (south) at Colfax. The entrance to the county park is on your left a short 1/4 mile.
Note that the park may charge an admission. You may ask if the admission applies to spectators for the CC meet.
BOB THOMAS (LOWELL) INVITE
To reach Lowell, travel north from DeMotte on 231 to the red flashing light. Turn left (west) on Hwy 2. At the first stop light on the east side of Lowell, turn right (north). The HS will be in view. Enter the drive behind the school.
Spectators will have to walk around the fenced in football field. Team camps are usually between the softball and baseball fields, north of the football field.
Girls' varsity @ 9:00am CST
Boys' varsity @ 9:35am CST
All reserve @ 10:25am CST
Runners should arrive for the bus at 6:05am.
This race is held at the Tippecanoe Amphitheatre (click link and then click My Places), north of Lafayette, IN, on Hwy 43. Travel south on Interstate 65. Exit on Hwy 43.
Turn right (south). The Amphitheatre is located about a mile down the road on the left (east) side of the road.
The trip should take about an hour.
NORTH WHITE INVITE
The bus will leave at 7:15am from behind KVHS. The girls will run first at approximately 9am central time.
The NW Invite is held in the town park in Monon, Indiana.
From our area, head east to Hwy 421. Turn south (right) and travel to Monon.
Cross Hwy 16 in the middle of town.
Continue across the railroad tracks and look for W 2nd Street. Turn right (west).
Travel through a residential area for 4 blocks.
The town park is straight ahead; however, you may have to turn right and drive to the next intersection (West Park Road), turn left, and use the north entrance.
Parking is around the perimeter of the park. Beware that a middle school race may be taking place when you arrive, running on the parts of the road that rings the perimeter of the park. You may have to wait to park.
