KV Girls' Track and Field Competes Well at State Meet; Special Awards Given at Awards Night

June 9, 2014
Kankakee Valley High School

On Friday, June 6th at IU-Bloomington, KVHS was represented well in four events at the state track and field meet by their girls' track team.  Soph. sensation Jenna Jungels, who has qualified a remarkable 10x for state meets indoors and out, received her 3rd All-State honor by virtue of her gutsy 9th place in the 100 hurdles, despite clipping a hurdle late in the race.  Her time in the finals was 15.45, however in the trials, "Jr." blasted to a school-record time of 14.87, (breaking her own mark) closing fast to finish 2nd in her heat and earn an automatic bid to the finals and the podium.  She was also 14th in the long jump with a leap of 16'-11 3/4'' and ran a terrific 4x100 relay leg.  That team was 22nd, 4th in their heat, in a solid time of 50.28.  Sr. sprint sensation, Leanna Mulloy, also had a very courageous meet.  Following a car crash earlier in the week, "Lee" ran the 100 in 12.74, good for 17th, and anchored the 4x1 squad, this same 4x1 had also qualified for state in 2013, in a school-record time of 49.37.  Leanna has also qualified for state multiple times indoors and out, earning an 8th place medal in the indoor 55 during her stellar career, and qualifying for the outdoor state meet in 2012 in the 100, 200 and 4x400 relay.  Her high school career is not over, as she has been invited to be an Indiana All-Star, a tremendous honor, and KV's first one in many, many years.  That meet (Midwest Meet of Champions) will be next weekend in Ohio, and please look for more details about that meet on here later this summer.  She is planning on attending Purdue and studying pharmacy.  Also running the 4x100 again at state this year were senior leaders Gab Martin and Joli ("JJ") Jungels, both of whom ran very strong legs at the state meet.  "JJ", a multiple All-NCC selection and regional qualifier, was the heart and soul of the 4x defending sectional champions.  She is looking to continue her academic and track career at St. Joe's, as she was also recently named class valedictorian.  On Thursday Gab signed with Purdue Cal to play volleyball, allowing one of KV's top all-around athletes to also continue her academic and athletic career.  Distance stars Allison Rockley (IUN) and Brittany Stepp (planning on joining Joli Jungels at St. Joe's), and thrower Beth Jansma (signed to play basketball in college), have been tremendous leaders and role models. All the seniors will be missed, (including Sydney Barrett, Janna Witvoet and Audra Lewis) and we wish them well in their future endeavors.  Team special awards were passed out recently, and they are as follows: Co-Most Valuable Throwers: Jansma, also Captain, and Alyssa Eger-also All-NCC Honorable Mention (HM);  Most Valuable Jumper/Hurdler Award; Jenna Jungels-also 1st Team All-NCC in the 100 hurdles, 4x100 and 200 and HM in long jump; Most Valuable Sprinter: Leanna Mulloy, also All-NCC 1st Team in the 100 and 4x100 and 2nd Team in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, Academic All-NCC and Captain; Most Valuable Distance Runner and Captain: Allison Rockley, also Academic All-NCC;  Most Valuable Mid-Distance Runner and Captain, and Academic All-NCC: Brittany Stepp; Most Improved Award: Shanan Patrick; Co-Kougar Pride Awards: Breanna Rose and Joli Jungels-also All-NCC 1st Team in the 4x100 relay, and 2nd Team in the 100; also Academic All-State 1st Team and Academic All-NCC, and Captain; Rookie of the Year: Brittany Kent, also All-NCC 2nd Team in the 4x400 relay along with Mulloy and Leah and Kara Gouwens; Captain Award: Gab Martin, also 1st Team All-NCC in the 4x100 relay, and Academic All-NCC;  Mykenzie Seegers was All-NCC HM in the pole vault, and was also a regional qualifier as were many of the special award winners, plus Allison Schultheis, Jenna Musall and Jazmyne Mehay.  Winning individual sectional events were: Jenna Jungels in the 100 hurdles (meet record), long jump, 4x100 relay (meet record) along with Joli Jungels, Gab Martin and Mulloy, and the 200 (meet record); Mulloy in the 100; and the 4x400 relay team of Jo. Jungels, L. Gouwens, Mulloy and K. Gouwens. KV returns 23 varsity letterwinners for 2015.  Congratulations to all members of the 2014 squad for making it one of the best in school history!!  (Please return uniforms asap...Coach Lewallen is in the KVHS Alternative School Mondays through Thursdays from 8 am to noon; you can turn them into the AD's office, or send them to coach through a cross country runner, thank you.)
