Kougars off to Good Start in Sectionals
May 22, 2014By Katee Sanderson of Kankakee Valley High School
Crown Point, IN--Kankakee Valley High School meets a familiar face in the first round of sectionals. After playing Lowell on Monday, KV won 4-1. This time it was a 5-0 victory over NCC Lowell that advances KV into the semi-finals. .
The Kougars looked focused, and determined on all courts. Molly Sanderson was the first point for the Kougars with a 6-1, 6-0 win over her #1 singles opponent. The others followed suit.
KV’s Rikki Young made quick work of her #3 singles opponent with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Paige Sanders dominated the #2 singles court 6-0, 6-0. Paige gives KV their 3rd and clinching point.
KV’s #2 doubles team of Courtney Brzezinski, and Jessie Smundin defeat their opponents 6-1, 6-1. The Kougars take a 4-0 lead.
Sanderson was the first point for the Kougars with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Bulldog’s foreign exchange student.
All eyes turn to the intense match at #1 doubles. KV may have dominated the score cards, 6-3, 6-2 but the score does not do the match justice. #1 doubles had just fell short of Lowell only two days earlier, 7-5, 6-3. KV turned that match around when it counts most, the post-season.
“The girls played very clean tennis tonight.” Coach Katee said. “I knew #1 doubles was capable of winning that match, even after Monday. However, it is not often that a tennis match gets reversed with just one day in between. It is awesome to see the girls so determined in sectionals.”
The Kougars are now 15-1 and will take on Lake Central tonight at 4:15pm at Crown Point.
