KV serves Crown Point First Loss

Wheatfield, IN--Kankakee Valley High School defeats Crown Point in a 3-2 nail biter at home on Wednesday.
Senior #1 doubles team of Lexi Howard and Madison Babicka ran into tough competition in their position. They battled hard, but Crown Point came out on top.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead when their #2 doubles team defeated Maddy Steinke and Megan Groen. But the match took a sudden turn in the singles.
On the #1 singles court, Molly Sanderson won an easy first set but was in a battle for the second. At #2 singles, Paige Sanders was down a set but winning the second. And at #3 singles, Rikki Young was in a battle but in control of the match. The Kougars needed all three singles matches to win.
Sanderson was the first point for the Kougars with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Bulldog’s foreign exchange student.
Young followed with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat at #3 singles, tying up the score 2-2. All eyes turn to the #2 singles court where Paige Sanders was in the third and deciding set.
Paige came out in the third set on fire with a 3-0 lead. However, the Bulldogs were not going down that easy and Sanders soon found her court at 4-3. They battled back and forth but Sanders clinched the victory 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and the Kougars win.
“The girls played their hearts out tonight, and it paid off.” Coach Katee said. “It is truly amazing what a group of girls can accomplish when they put in the effort. It was by far the hottest the girls have had to play in this season, and they handled the heat well. We were the underdogs going into this match, and we played like the experienced team. The sky is the limit for KV tennis.”
The JV team also ran into tough competition against Crown Point.
Senior, Courtney Brzezinski fought hard, but fell in the end at the #1 singles position.
Junior, Jessie Smundin won the first set against her #2 singles opponent, but the Bulldogs fought back to win the second. They played a tiebreak to 10 points in lieu of a third set. Jessie battled, but fell 11-9 in the third.
Sophomore Sydney Capouch was in a battle at the #3 singles position. After dropping the first set, she came back and won the second. She also had a shootout in the tiebreak, but the Kougars won this won 10-8.
#1 doubles team of Katelyn Kamminga and Delaney Hershman ran into a tough opponent. They put in a lot of effort, but Crown Point came out on top.
KV’s #2 doubles team of Freshman Britney Hoffman and Kat Miles ran into another tough Crown Point doubles team. The duo fought hard, but the Bulldogs took yet another doubles point.
Kougar’s #3 doubles team of Kyla Dykstra and Christina Birky put in a lot of effort, but Crown Point took another doubles point from the Kougars.
Katelyn Kamminga teamed up with Courtney Brzezinksi and revenged their previous matches for a victory.
Jessie Smundin and Sydney Capouch also teamed up, to give the Kougars another victory.
The Kougars are now 7-1 overall (3-1 NCC). KV will take on Highland High School on the road Thursday, May 08, 2014.
