Kougars Defeat Knox

Wheatfield, IN--Kankakee Valley High School defeats Knox 3-2 Friday evening.
The Kougars took a 1-0 lead when Molly Sanderson swept the #1 singles court, posting a 6-0, 6-0 score.
Junior standout, Rikki Young was a quick 2nd point for the Kougars. Young also dominated her singles court 6-0, 6-0.
Senior duo, Lexi Howard and Madison Babicka were the clinching point for the Kougars. Howard and Babicka won 6-1, 6-1 at #1 doubles.
Knox got their first point at #2 doubles. Maddy Steinke and Megan Groen ran up against a tough team, and came up a little short.
Paige Sanders was the marathon match of the night. After losing a close first set in a tiebreak, she came back to win the 2nd set 6-4. They played a tiebreak to 10 in leu of a third set, since the match had already been decided. The tiebreak did not fair well for the Kougars, but it was a great effort at the #2 singles position.
“It was great to tack on another victory today.” Coach Katee said. “This is another team we lost to convincingly last season (4-1). We were able to turn it around tonight, and I am so proud of the girls. They are working so hard, and it has been paying off all season.”
Kougars JV team also had another victory tonight 5-2.
Senior, Curt Breezy Brzezinksi had a convincing win at the #1 singles spot.
Junior, Jessie Smundin is leaving her mark at the #2 singles position, earning another victory. She dominated her opponent, only dropping a game in the process.
Sophomore, Sydney Capouch ran into some tough competition at #3 singles. Capouch fought hard, but lost a close battle.
#1 doubles team of Ariel Garcia and Liv Trainor earned the 3rd point for the Kougars. They had a dominating performance, and only dropped one game in the process.
Lexi Hamstra and Delaney Hershman played together for the first time tonight, and dominated. They did not drop a game.
Senior Katelyn Kamminga remains undefeated this season, and this time on the singles court. Katelyn did not drop a game! Congrats, Katelyn and keep up the great work.
Freshmen duo Britney ‘Bert’ Hoffman and Kat Miles had a convincing win at #3 doubles. They moved up a position, and only dropped two games in the process.
Freshmen Christina Birky and Kyla Dykstra both tried out the singles court tonight. Christina Birky came out with another victory, remaining undefeated on the season. Kyla Dykstra had to play against a higher position JV player, who played two matches this evening. Dykstra fell short of a victory, but put up a good effort.
The Kougars are now 6-1 overall (3-1 NCC). Kougars’ JV team move to 5-2 overall (3-1 NCC). KV goes on the road for the Highland Doubles Invite Saturday May 3rd.
