KV Upsets Chesterton

April 24, 2014
By Katee Sanderson of Kankakee Valley High School

Chesterton, IN--Kankakee Valley High School defeats Chesterton in a dramatic 3-2 fashion on the road Wednesday.

Freshman, Molly Sanderson was the first point for the Kougars with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over her Trojan opponent at #1 singles.

The Trojans tied up the score with a win at #2 doubles over KV’s Maddy Steinke and Megan Groen.

Chesterton took a 2-1 lead after defeating Kougars’ #1 doubles team of Lexi Howard and Madison Babicka in a close two set match.

Junior Paige Sanders was the game changer for the Kougars.  Sanders fought to win a close first set battle against her #2 singles opponent.  Her second set was on cruise control, and her 6-4, 6-1 defeat over the Trojans tied up the score 2-2.

Junior, Rikki Young has been automatic all season long and that did not change today.  Young was the last match on court, but the scorecards were in her control with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #3 singles.  This gave the Kougars their 3rd and clinching point.

“I cannot begin to describe how proud I am of the girls.”  Coach Katee said.  “They have yet again, proven themselves as a great tennis team.  To grab a win over such a consistently tough program is a great accomplishment.  I don’t think it has set in with the girls yet what they’ve achieved so far this season.  KV tennis has a lot to be proud of.”

Kougars JV team fell to Chesterton 5-3.

There are two things you can count on with Senior, Courtney ‘Curt Breezy’ Brzezinski; 1 she is going to win, and 2 she will take her time doing it. Brzezinski had another long battle, but remained undefeated with an 8-4 win over her opponent grabbing the first point for the Kougars.

Senior, Ariel Garcia tried out the singles court today, but the Trojans were able to tie up the score 1-1.

Sophomore Sydney Capouch had a very long match at #3 singles.  She gave it her all, but only fell 2 points away from a victory.

Kougars’ #1 doubles team of Liv Trainor and Amanda DeRolf fell to the Trojans 8-1.  Chesterton leads 3-1.

KV’s #2 doubles team of Lexi Hamstra and Jessie Smundin lost a close 8-4 battle, giving the Trojans a 4-1 lead.

Veteran doubles team of Delaney Hershman and Katelyn Kamminga had an awesome comeback victory.  After trailing the Trojans, Kamminga and Hershman fought back to win 8-7 (7-4), and remain undefeated this season.

Freshmen Kat Miles and Britney Hoffman ran into a tough matchup at #4 doubles.

Kyla Dykstra and Christina Birky were the 3rd point for the Kougars at #5 doubles.  After trailing their opponents the whole set, they came back to win the match 8-6.  The freshmen duo remain undefeated this season.

The Kougars are now 3-1 overall (1-1 NCC) (JV 2-2).  KV will take on Griffith at home for a conference show down at 4:45pm Thursday April 24th.
