Wheatfield, IN--Kankakee Valley High School drops their first match to NCC foe Munster 4-1 on Tuesday.
Munster grabbed a quick point at #2 doubles with a win over Kougars’ Megan Groen and Maddy Steinke.
The Kougars also ran into trouble at #1 doubles and went down 0-2 after Munster defeated Madison Babicka and Lexi Howard.
The Mustangs clinched the match at #2 singles when Paige Sanders gave it her all, but fell in two close sets.
Junior, Rikki Young was the lone point for the Kougars with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at #3 singles.
The #1 singles match was the last match to be completed. The Mustangs fought back after Molly Sanderson won the first set, to take it to a third and final set. Molly gave it her all, but after over two hours Munster won the third set under the lights.
“Munster is always the team to beat. Even when they are not the best team in the area, they are the team to beat.” Coach Katee said. “It feels awesome to push them. I believe KV tennis earned a lot of respect tonight. The girls gave it their all, losing a close 4-1 match. I have never been so proud of a loss.”
The Mustangs only brought 9 players to take on the Kougars. So only one JV match could be played. Munster’s #1 doubles defeated Liv Trainor and Amanda DeRolf 8-5, making the final score 1-0.
The Mustangs' same JV doubles team played again vs Lexi Hamstra and Ariel Garcia in an exhibition, but were again too tough.
Kankakee Valley is now 2-1, (1-1 NCC). The Kougars go on the road to take on Chesterton Wednesday April 23rd for Monday’s rain make-up. The match is set to start at 4:30 pm.
