Hobart, IN--Kankakee Valley High School opens up their season with a 3-2 conference victory against Hobart High School.
Freshman, Molly Sanderson was the first point for the Kougars with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Geena Lammertin at #1 singles.
Junior, Rikki Young gave the Kougars a 2-0 lead after she defeated her #3 singles opponent 7-5, 6-1.
The Brickies earned their first point at #1 doubles, where senior Doubles duo Lexi Hamstra and Lexi Howard lost a heartbreaker. After dropping a quick first set, the Kougars fought back to take it to a third set where they lost a close battle.
Sophomore, Megan Groen made her varsity debut a memorable one when she and senior Maddy Steinke clinched the match at #2 doubles. After the Kougars dominated the first set 6-0, the Brickies fought back in the second to take it to a third, but they were no match for the Kougars in the end.
Junior, Paige Sanders gave it all she had in her #2 singles match. She had her back against the wall down a set and 4-3, before fighting back to force a third and final set. She fell just short in the end, but battled hard.
“I’m pleased to find our way to victory today.” Coach Katee said. “It’s tough when your first match of the season ends up being a conference match. That takes away time figuring out the best lineup thru trial-and-error. I’m proud to see some of the younger girls stepping up for the team today. We have a bright future ahead of us.”
Kougars JV team had a perfect 8-0 victory over the Hobart Brickies.
Senior, Courtney ‘Curt’ Brzezinski had a very long battle, pulling out a 8-6 win at #1 singles.
Junior, Jessie Smundin was never in trouble defeating her opponent 8-3 at #2 singles. Sophomore, Sydney Capouch also put up a convincing 8-3 victory at #3 singles.
#1 doubles team with seniors Liv ‘Swizzle’ Trainor and Amanda DeRolf defeated their Brickie opponents 8-4.
Kougars’ #2 doubles team of Madison Babicka and Ariel Garcia had a perfect 8-0 victory. Senior, Katelyn Kamminga and junior Delaney Hershman also dominated their opponents 8-0.
Kougars’ #4 doubles team of freshmen Britney ‘Bert’ Hoffman and Kat Miles won their career opener with a 8-5 win over the Brickies.
Christina Birky and Kyla Dykstra dominated their opponents 8-0 at #5 doubles.
The Kougars are now 1-0 overall (1-0 NCC). KV will take on North Judson at 4:30pm tomorrow in their home opener.
