April 11, 2014Kankakee Valley High School
Last night the KV Girls' Track and Field team, ranked 6th in the area, defeated a very good and classy Hanover Central team 76.5-55.5. Jenna Jungels won the long jump-17'- 1 3/4", 100 hurdles in 15.8. the 4x1 in 52.1 and the 200 in a blazing 26.0. "Jr" now leads the area in all four of these events. Brittany Kent, one of KV's most versatile athletes, won the 400 in 65.9, and blasted strong legs on all three relay winners: 4x8 (a season-best-SB, 10:52.3), 4x1 (52.1) and 4x4 (4:31.5). Big sis Joli hustled to 1st in the 100 with a fine SB time of 13.1, led off the 4x1 winner and out lasted teammate Leah Gouwens in the 300's, with a SB time of 52.1, another great meet for "JJ." The distance and field events also did very well. Joining BKent on the 4x800 winner was Allison Schultheis, Allison Rockley and Brittany Stepp, with all four running very strong meets. Rockley blasted a fine 5:57.0 1600, good for 2nd in a strong field, led by Hanover's stellar Umlauf, one of the area's top distance runners. Stepp took off hard and stayed strong to win the 800 in a very swift time of 2:32.8, a SB, with Schultheis a strong 3rd in a personal record (PR) time of 2:41.3. Another Allison, a freshman, like Schultheis and Kent, Tokarz, has added a great deal to the distance crew. Running the 3200 again, she grabbed 2nd in a huge PR time of 13:17.0, for Coach Stephanie Call's distance crew. Coach David Veldman's throwers also battled a stud from Hanover, York, one of the state's best. Kara Gouwens grabbed 3rd in the shot, and in her first ever pole vault, cleared 6 feet to grab 2nd, with sister Erin-3rd, also at 6 feet. K. Gouwens then led off the 4x4 winner with an excellent split of 65.9. In the discus event, KV grabbed important 2nd and 3rd places. Jazmyne Mehay was 2nd with a toss of 92'-3", with Emily Tauber coming through big-time with a huge PR throw of 77'-10". Coach Page Walczak's high jumpers were solid, with Dannae Yozman tying for 2nd, and Mackenzie DeMars taking 3rd, both clearing 4'-6". L. Gouwens had a great meet: anchoring the 4x1 winner, running well on the 4x4 winner and taking a very strong 2nd in the 300's in a PR time of 52.5. Julianna Colon likewise was terrific, taking 2nd in the 400 in a PR time of 65.9, and running an excellent 4x4 leg for that winning relay team. Yozman was 3rd in the 400 to complete the sweep for KV, and 9 big points. Emily Ingram was a strong third in the 100. Outstanding team win, ladies. The KV Girls' Track and Field team and coaches send their condolences to the Cavinder family. You all are in our prayers.
