March 31, 2014Kankakee Valley High School
In Friday's Lake Central Pumas/Indians Invite the Lady Kougars took just 12 hardy souls to St. Joseph's for a very entertaining meet, and did very well, scoring 70 points to grab 4th place, vs. some of the area's top teams. Sr. Joli Jungels won the high jump (HJ) with an outstanding personal record leap of 5'-0", KV's first 5 foot HJer in years!! "JJ" also long jumped (LJ) 16'-2 1/2" for 2nd in that event and took 6th in both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Both her HJ and LJ are among the area bests. Little sister Jenna, aka Jr., also feeling under the weather, had another terrific meet, winning the 100 hurdles in a blazing PR time of 15.45, just off the school-record despite the frigid conditions. She also won the LJ with an excellent leap of 17'-5'', and took a ery strong 2nd in the 200 in a fast time of 26.85. "Jr." is the area leader in the LJ and the 100's, and ranks 2nd in the 200. Soph. thrower Jazmyne Mehay also had a tremendous meet, grabbing 2nd vs. the very tough field on her final toss, with an outstanding heave of 103'-10 1/2, a PR for Mehay!! Sr. Janna Witvoet also had a PR in the shot with her toss of 24 feet +. Faith Hoffman, Emily Tauber and Emma Fase also competed in the throws Friday night for KV. KV did not enter 4 events at all, but did very well, where entered. Along with the above-mentioned highlights, the "Britts", old and young, both had terrific meets. Sr. distance star BStepp battled and beat some of the area's top distance runners, grabbing 5th in the 1600 with a fine time of 5:59.0, also taking 5th in the 800 in a very solid 2:44.4, and she ran on KV's 4th place 1600 relay team. Freshman BKent ran two remarkable 400's, blazing to a 3rd place open 400 in an outstanding early season time of 64.02, then gaining a lot of ground on her 66 second 4x4 anchor leg to highlight that event! Soph. Dannae Yozman had a fine meet as well, taking 8th in the HJ (4'-6") and 8th in the 400 (69.68.) Hard working freshmen Julianna Colon and Breanna Rose ran the first two legs of the 4x4, with Colon running a very solid 67 split and also running the 100 and 200 trials. Rose ran a solid 400 as well earlier in the meet. A big thank-you from the KV coaching staff to these athletes and their families who braved the cold, yet gained tremendous experience in this meet. KV returns to action, April 5th at Thornridge HS in IL, in a meet titled, "The Battle of the Borders," which will also feature outstanding competition from both states.
