Boys' cross country competes in sectionals
October 16, 2013By Tim Adams of Kankakee Valley High School
KV boys' cross country has had one thought in mind since the end of last season. After placing second at sectional to Morgan Township's best team ever at sectionals...and after placing seventh at Regionals in their best finish in coach Adams's era, that thought?
That thought is best summed up in their motto this season: "October is calling name."
Distance runners know that summer distance builds the base; early season workouts and meets build speed endurance. But those same workouts and meets, tearing down the body, can mask improvement. Until October.
With patience and wise training, a distance runner hopes that October brings a peak. "Some runners, come October, are moving up, some are moving down. We've adjusted our training some, so we hope to be in that first group," states Coach Adams.
On Tuesday, October 15, 2013 KV's boys put together their best effort to date, and strongest scoring effort since 2000. Paced by Travis Conley in 2nd place, and Bryce Gawronski in 4th, KV's 35 points topped the 12 team field. No team has scored as well in the lat ten years.
Other scorers: Mike Nava, 8th; Robert Svitek, 9th; Bryce Niewoehner 12th; Isaac Tillema 17th; Kristian Cullings, 21st.
The cross country team faces the Regional field at 10:00 am this Saturday at New Prairie. There they will face the stop five teams from the Chesterton sectional. Perennially, those five teams have grabbed th lion's share of top five teams advancing to Semistate.
That is, unless October calls the Kougars' name and they answer loudly.
