Yesterday, at the Munster Swimming and Diving Sectional Finals, KV's Lady Kougars did extremely well. Swimming against many of the top teams and individuals in the area and state, KV was a very solid 5th as a team with 159 points, in the 14 team scoring field. Host Munster edged Lake Central for the title by 2 points. KV started their day with a very strong 5th in the 200 medley relay from the championship heat, in a season-best time of 2:02.91. All four members: Jordan Rhoades, Alysia Beenes, Maddie Babicka and Abbey Sittema swam great, with Beenes swimming a PR split of 34.90 for her 50 breaststroke leg! Sittema placed 10th in the 200 individual medley in a fine time of 2:25.74. Babicka had an outstanding 50 free, placing 6th in 24.97, and cementing her place among the area's elite sprinters. Jordan Brodner was 10th and Maribeth Strong 14th in the diving event. Sonny Anderson was 15th in the 100 fly. KV once again had tremendous success in the 100 free event, scoring three places and scoring 23 points in this one event! Sittema dominated her heat to win in a personal record (PR) time of 57.07, good for 9th place overall. Brittany Stepp, a three-sport star who comes up big in big meets, did that again with her PR of 1:05.26, good for 15th place. Babicka, swimming again in the championship final, swam a full second faster than on Thursday night, placing 7th in 56.01, an outstanding time!! The 200 free relay was also stellar, placing 6th in the championship heat, with Beenes, Anderson, Stepp and Madi Klauer all breaking 30 seconds for their splits; Anderson swimming a huge PR split of 29.88, with Klauer going a blazing 27.95. Their time was an excellent 1:56.5. The 100 back went well for the Kougs as well, with Rhoades blasting a PR time of 1:11.5, good for 13th place. An ill Kate Lott gutted out a fine 14th place. Like the 100 free, the 100 breaststoke event went very well again, with KV placing all three of their swimmers. Fr. Leah Gouwens capped off her fine season with a 16th place. The ever improving Klauer blasted to a PR time of 1:20.27, a remarkable 16 second improvement from the beginning of the year, taking 12th place and entering KV's all-time Top 10 list!! Improving on her current top ten ranking was sr. leader Beenes, an outstanding leader by example for this year's squad. Seeded 10th, Beenes hustled in first in her heat, and 9th overall, in a PR time of 1:19.07. THAT is the way to finish a career!! KV scored 15 points in that event alone! The 400 free relay team of Sittema (58.18 100 split), Stepp, Rhoades and Babicka (56.7) had KV's other top 5 finish of the evening with their outstanding 5th place in the championship heat. Their time was 4:05.6, nearly 4 seconds faster than on Thursday night! 2012-13 was an outstanding season for the Lady Kougars with these among many highlights: an 8-4 overall record, 3rd at the NCC meet, two relay team titles, Babicka's three school-records and one by Sittema and many personal records set! Head Coach Kevin Stephens and assistants Lane Lewallen and Caleb Tillema are all extremely proud of this year's team!! Go Kougars!
