Last night the Lady Kougar Swim Team swam tough in the Munster Sectional Prelims. Facing some of the top individuals and teams in the state and area, KV hung very tough. Advancing to Saturday's championship heat (Top 8 from last night) was the 200 medley relay team of Kate Lott, Alysia Beenes, Maddie Babicka and Abbey Sittema. They were 5th in a season-best time of 2:03.72, and all four swam their fastest splits of the season. They also all had excellent meets the rest of the way. In the 200 free, fr. Leah Gouwens, having a remarkable season for her first ever season swimming competitively, swam a PR by over 8 seconds with a time of 2:26.97. Sittema placed 10th in the 200 individual medley in a fine time of 2:25.16, to qualify for the consolation heat (places 9th-16th.) In the 50 free Babicka qualified 6th with her time of 25.28. Sonny Anderson qualified 13th in the 100 butterfly with a courageous effort. The 100 free was stellar for the Kougs with all three swimmers qualifying. Babicka was 8th, Sittema 9th in a PR time of 57.76, and Brittany Stepp was a strong 16th in 1:06.86. In the 500 free Sarah Axtell swam a PR time of 7:27.23. The 200 free relay team of Beenes, Stepp, Lott and Madi Klauer were a very strong 6th, all four swimmers breaking 30 for their splits. Lott and Jordan Rhoades swam excellent 100 backs, Lott placing 13th in a PR time of 1:12.45, while Rhoades, battling illness, gutted out a 14th place. Jess Nagel also PR'd in this event with her time of 1:25.72 to win her heat. The 100 breaststroke event again was outstanding for KV, with the talented trio of Beenes, Klauer and Gouwens all advancing. Beenes hustled home in 10th in a season-best time of 1:20.57, Klauer blasted an excellent PR time of 1:21.07, good for 11th, while Gouwens also PR'd in a time of 1:24.4, good for 16th place!! The 400 free relay provided KV's top finish of the evening. Sittema, Stepp, Rhoades and Babicka were 2nd in their heat, and placed 4th overall in 4:09.19. Those advancing will join divers Jordan Brodner and Maribeth Strong Sat. morning, again at Munster. Go Kougars!!
