November 14, 2012Kankakee Valley High School
In last night's first swim meet of the season, the Lady Kougars swam very well, defeating a solid Lowell squad by a score of 99.5-74.5. Jr. stars Maddie Babicka and Abbey Sittema again led the way with a combined 7 wins. Babicka took first in all 4 of her events, highlighted by her blistering 50 free, which she won in a tremendous time of 25.01, shattering her old school-record of 25.50, set last season. She also won the 500 free in 6:01.74, swam the fly leg of the 200 medley relay winner, and anchored the 400 free relay to another victory! Sittema was stellar as well, winning the 100 free in a fine time of 59.40, anchoring the 200 medley relay winner, leading off the 400 free relay winner, and taking 2nd in the demanding 200 individual medley. Jr. Audra Lewis had perhaps the best meet of her career; dominating the 100 breast event, winning in 1:25.0, and leading a 1-2-3 sweep for the Kougs in that event, followed in order by fr. Leah Gouwens and soph. Madi Klauer. Both Gouwens and Klauer had excellent meets. Lewis also swam on the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay winners, and took 3rd in the ind. medley. Jordan Rhoades also had a fine meet, swimming back on the 200 medley relay winner, swimming a leg on the 400 free relay winner, and taking 2nd in the 100 back. Maribeth Strong, in just her second year of diving, took a solid 2nd place in the diving event. Jr. three-sport star, Brittany Stepp, also a cross country and track stand-out, had the best meet of her swim career. She blazed a personal-record in the 50 free of 30.35, good for 2nd; she then hustled in for 2nd in the 100 free, and blazed a 50 free relay anchor leg of 30.09 to lead that squad to 2nd place. Gouwens, in her first ever varsity swim meet, led off that relay, followed by Jordon Dittrich and Klauer. Dittrich also took 4th in the 50 free, as did Jess "Smiley" Nagel in the 100 back. Caitlin Roth used a strong finish to take 2nd in the grueling 500 free, and joined Sarah Axtell, Sonny Anderson and Nagel on the 2nd place 400 free relay team. Axtell was 5th in the 200 free, Kate Lott took a strong 3rd in the 100 back, with sr. Jordyn Rentschler 3rd in the 100 butterfly, behind Anderson's strong 2nd place. The 1-0 Lady Kougars hit the road next Tuesday, the 20th, at Hobart.
