KV Girls' Cross 4th at Highland Invite; Boys' Cross 8th...

September 22, 2012
Kankakee Valley High School

Both KV Cross Country teams ran well at Saturday's Highland Invite.  The girls brought home the 4th place team trophy (tied for 3rd-4th on the tie-breaker), and the boys were a solid 8th after dealing with a fluke injury to jr. Robert Svitek.  Soph. Michelle Kent, battling a head cold, placed 5th in a personal record (PR) time of 19:43.0.  Juniors Kaylin Orsburn, Allison Rockley and Brittany Stepp packed very well, grabbing 13th, 14th, and 16th places.  Orsburn ran a season-best time of 20:46.0, Rockley was in at 20:47.0, and Stepp finished in 20:58.0 despite feeling under the weather.  All four of these ladies earned individual trophies for finishing in the top 20 of the varsity race.  Jr. Kate Lott-74th in 24:08.1, and sr. Rachel Krupa-75th in 24:08.4, ran strong, as did jr. Joli Jungels, still battling a sore hip.  JJ was 85th in 24:46.0.  This moves the ladies to an overall record of 61-40 as they prepare to defend their NCC title at the NCC meet Sat., Sept. 29th at Lowell.

For the boys, having to deal with Svitek's ankle sprain minutes before the race, soph. Bryce Gawronski, also battling a head cold, bided his time well, placing 29th in a PR time of 17:32.0.  Sr.  Brandon Hazlett hustled in 33rd with a time of 17:37.2; jr. Mike Nava was 42nd in 18:02.0, with fr. Isaac Tillema-45th in 18:10.0.  All four of these men earned ribbons for their efforts.  Jacob Stemper was 67th in 19:02.0; Andrew Schultheis-75th in 19:41.0, and Justin Edwards, thrust into the varsity race at the last second, hung tough for 123rd in 24:27.0.  KV's boys also return to action in the NCC meet Sat. the 29th.  (First mile times are below:)
