CC teams post Rotary Ramble results
August 11, 2012By Tim Adams of Kankakee Valley High School
In weather unusually mild for this summer, many members of the HS boys' and girls' cross country teams used the Rotary Ramble to test their 5k fitness.
The five girls who ran totaled nearly a 2 minute improvement over their Ramble effort last year, or an average of more than 23 seconds faster per runner. Good job, Kent, Stepp, Rockley, Orsburn, and Krupa!
Of the seven boys who ran, five have relatively little experience at racing 5k. The three healthy veterans--Gawronski, Hazlett, and Stemper--totaled a whopping 3:25 improvement, or an average of 1:08 per runner. "We've done no speed work yet that is to credit for their improvement," comments Coach Adams. "Mark it up to a year's maturity and experience as a runner...and a summer dedicated to building a good base of miles."
Of the "rookies," freshman Isaac Tillema is working into HS mileage, notching a third place finish on the team. Congrats to Nava, Schulteis, and Edwards for running well in their first 5k. "I'm excited to see what these three can do, once they've had more experience at pacing out their efforts over 3.1 miles," remarked Adams.
Both teams compete next Tuesday at home in their Hokum Karem, 5pm.
