Great Night for Lady Kougar Track & Field Team!
May 23, 2012Kankakee Valley High School
Last night at the highly competitive Chesterton Regional, the KV Lady Kougar Track and Field Team performed at their very best, exceeding their seeds in every event, and placing an outstanding 6th as a team with 36 points! Soph. sprint sensation Leanna Mulloy advanced to the state meet in all three of her events, a remarkable feat. Mulloy was 2nd in the 100 in 12.41, and finished strong again in the 200, also placing 2nd there, in 25.87. She then ran the third leg of the state qualifying 1600 relay team, which took 3rd in a school-record time of 4:04.97. Fr. Kara Gouwens led off that quartet with a strong 60 flat split, followed by soph. Gabby Martin, who blazed her leg also in a 60 flat time, Mulloy then handed to sr. leader Dayton Dellahan, who anchored the exciting race all the way to IU-Bloomington for the state meet!! Sr. Bree Babe, seeded tied for 10th, took 5th in the pole vault, tying her own school-record with a leap of 10'-0", an entire foot higher than at sectional, capping off her tremendous career with her highest regional finish. The 3200 relay, featuring soph. Allison Rockley, soph. Brittany Stepp, fr. Michelle Kent, and Dellahan, ran roughly 16 seconds faster than at sectional, taking a very strong 5th in a time of 10:05.21, with Rockley and Stepp blasting 2:30.0 800 legs. Kent then ran an outstanding 1600, grabbing 6th, seeded 10th, in a personal-record (PR) time of 5:37.09, defeating some stellar opponents along the way. Rockley ran a very good 1600 as well, running a near PR time of 5:50.82, as did Martin in the 100 trials, running a strong time of 12.94. Kent then ran the 3200 of her life, hustling in with a time of 12:12.31, a PR by some 25 seconds! Her buddy, soph. jumper/hurdler Joli Jungels, also had a tremendous meet, far exceeding her seeds in both the hurdles and long jump. "JJ" ran the 300's in a PR time of 49.76, and despite being seeded 10th in the jump, not only made the finals, but placed 6th with a fine jump of 16'-1 1/4". This was the best KV result at regionals in many years, and ALL of KV's athletes should be very proud of the championship season they've had. Best wishes to Mulloy, Gouwens, Martin and Dellahan as they compete in the state meet, June 1st, at IU-Bloomington.
