Rios proud to be Latino and a KnightRichard James (RJ) Rios, a senior at St. Francis de Sales High School in Toledo, is the co-president of LASSO—its Latin American Student Support Organization.
“The club celebrates our culture. We reach out to the Latino community at Christmas time by supplying toys, jackets, and gloves to families in need. We hold a Cinco de Mayo party every year as a fundraiser for our scholarship program. We have designed and created a St. Francis scarf that we sell as a fundraiser for the scholarship.”
LASSO also supports the 8th Annual Latino Scholarship Day with the Toledo Mud Hens, scheduled for July 25, 2010.
As a sophomore, RJ received the LASSO scholarship by writing an essay about how he has helped the Latino community and what it means to him to be a Latino. “I am so proud to be Latino; I have not experienced any difficulty or challenge in being Latino.”
