KC’s HAMILTON CONTINUES SURGE THROUGH DISTRICT PLAY
January 12, 2011Klein Collins High School
The versatile Hamilton is widely regarded as a legitimate Division 1 prospect at either guard position and is a workhorse for head coach Kristi Odom, often playing the full 40 minutes of regulation.
"Hamilton is definitely a prime time player now heading through her junior year," says Matt Malatesta, editor in chief of Vype Magazine and a national recruiter for Rivals.com, an independent network of recruiting specialist.
"She has a great capacity to move without the ball and her ball handling skills are extremely proficient for a person her age."
Hamilton is a 15 year old junior and will likely be playing at the collegiate level as a 16 year old with the overriding potential for coaches to mature physically during the 4 year process.
"We transferred here from California when Veja was 7 and we never felt the need to hold her back," says mother Velicia.
"She was excelling so much in the classroom and on the court we decided to keep her with her classmates."
A natural leader to her teammates the soft spoken returning District 13-5A MVP is looking to combine with senior center co-captain Ashley Adams and sophomore guard Dominique Dillingham for a run into the playoffs starting in mid-February.
Perennial district favorite Decaney and the always dangerous Tomball Cougars will be hard fought tests for the younger Tigers.
"We've got to step our game up the next couple weeks," says Veja.
"We kinda slacked off the past few games over the holidays, we're going to be practicing hard. We'll be ready."
Although often unemotional and stoic on the court the cerebral Hamilton has often taken over games late with her ability to adjust to defenses designed to limit her touches. During the holiday Peggy Whitley Classic Hamilton scorched the nets by scoring 106 points over 3 days, often slashing and cutting her way for easy layups with a devastating crossover dribble.
"We definitely prefer an up tempo game with a lot of transition," says Hamilton, widely considered a favorite for her second District MVP.
"Our offense is definitely geared toward pushing the ball up the court, creating steals, and transition."
"That's how we run."
Upcoming must see games for Klein Collins includes Tomball Tuesday, January 11 and a rematch against the Decaney Wildcats a week later January 18.
Look for Veja Hamilton to solidify her reputation as one of the top guards in the state of Texas during the next fortnight of basketball which will determine the standings of District 13-5A.
