Road to the Final Four

March 9, 2011
By DeMarco King of Justin F Kimball High School

Students and faculty cheered on the Knight Basketball team this morning at the pep rally. "We're playing for our team, school, families and community", said Jarion Henry. Henry has to be present this weekend on the court. "We are a better team when he's (Jarion) court and not in foul trouble", stated Coach Johnson. Which the Knights are better. If he doesn't score a lot of points, he's either rebounding or making assist.
Austin Franklin and Oscar Lewis, both who are now seniors, remember being in this same position two years ago. Franklin, who's the only starter from the 2009 State Runners Up Team feels that they are a better team than that 2009 team. "We are more talented, aggressive, have more passion, and communicate more on the floor", stated Franklin. Lewis must make the open jumpers that are giving to him. He must shoot the ball. " I feel like we're a family. I must be a big brother to these other players that haven't been here. I must be a leader and keep everybody humble", said Lewis.
Jordan Williams, who has been a big help to the Knights this season, after coming from the Colony last year, has been in this position before also. "Playing last year, I had to create my own shots and I doubt the team because we had to face (Houston) Yates in the semi- finals last year. But know, I feel that if I have an off night, I have teammates that can step up and pick up where I'm slacking."
People in the community have been waiting on Coach Johnson to bring home a title like his father did in 1996-1997, when he was an assistant coach. In 1999, he led a group to the state finals, which he lost. But Johnson have other role players on the team that sometimes get looked over. Juniors Shannon Lilly and David Tucker and Freshman Deangelo Davis (Brother of David Kates, who averaged 21.5 and 11 rebounds in the state tournament), just to name a few.
"If I play hard on both sides of the court, we play as a team and not be selfish, we can win", stated Senior Foward, Jalen Jones. Jones has average 15 points a game, has to have a decent game. He doesn't have to score 40 points, but just do his part and when the play is called to him, knock down the 12 to 15 foot jumpers. With David Tucker coming off the bench, he can light up the stadium with his 3 point range. "When I'm called, I need to come with energy, make the shots, and play aggressive defense", Tucker. "Coach Snoop told us in the beginning of the year, Respect every opponent and that's what we must do." "I'm more mentally focus and prepared than last year", said Henry. Last year I was going throught the motion, this year, this is it." This team is one of the teams representing DISD down in Austin. Kimball is know as a basketball factory and a rich winning tradition. Coach Snoop has a ring as a player, now he's looking to get one as a Head Coach. "We can win it all, nobody can't stop us from being Champs", Frankin.
