2009 Freshman Baseball Season Recap
3-28-09 (games played at Ann Arbor Skyline) Bedford 11 AA Skyline 2 Justin McPherson started the game going 3 strong, no hit, shutout innings. Nick Kledzik earned the win going 3 innings and giving up 2 earned runs. He struck out 5 batters, while walking 1 batter. Zach Mills and Joe Bemister each added 2 hits and scored 2 runs in support of Kledzik. Alex Flores also aided in the scoring, hitting 2 singles, scoring 1 run, and adding an RBI. Zach Kitzmiller and Aaron Czesak helped key a huge 7 th inning where the team crossed the plate 5 times.Bedford 9 Tecumseh 6 Alex Flores earned the win going 2 innings strong and giving up 0 earned runs. Zach Mills ended the game going 2 strong innings, surrendering 1 hit and an earned run. Justin McPherson helped power the offense hitting 2 singles, driving in a run, and scoring 2 runs. Tyler Liebnau added a key hit in the 5 th inning, and later scored. 4-2-09 Bedford 9 Airport 1 Alex Flores pitched a complete game no hitter in picking up the win. Aaron Czesak made several nice plays in the outfield and added 2 hits in support of Flores. Zach Kitzmiller picked up a pair of doubles, driving in 2 runs and scoring 1. Mitch Kelly, Adam Glenn, and Tyler Hafner also added key hits as the Mules tallied 11 hits. Bedford 6 Airport 2 Nick Kledzik pitched 6 solid innings of 3 hit ball, picking up his 2 nd win of the season. Derek Miller was solid at 2 nd base, making several nice plays. The Mules scored 5 runs in a huge 3 rd inning, as the team batted around. Adam Glenn, Tyler Liebnau, and Zach Kitzmiller all picked up key 2 out hits in the 3 rd, all driving in runs. 4-16-09 Bedford 13 Milan 10 Aaron Czesak went 4 strong innings, giving up just 2 hits, in picking up the win. The Mules exploded for 7 runs in the 2 nd inning. Adam Glenn picked up 2 key hits, scoring 2 runs, and drove in 4 runs. Derek Miller was solid at the plate getting 3 hits while scoring 3 runs. Tyler Hafner also had a great game from the plate, picking up 2 hits while scoring 3 runs. Bedford 7 Milan2 Justin McPherson pitched 4 innings, while surrendering 3 hits, picking up the win. The Mules fell behind 2-0 early, before exploding for 6 runs in a huge 4 th inning. Mitch Kelly, Devin Garcia, and Zach Kitzmiller all had key at bats in the inning. Joe Bemister and Tyler Hafner also had key hits in the game for the Mules. Devin Garcia played great defense from short stop, making several key plays throughout the game. 4-23-09 Bedford 10 Adrian 12 Game Summary: The Mules fell behind 4-0 early, struggling to throw the ball across the plate. In the bottom of the first inning they rallied to take a 5-4 lead. However pitch location and shaky defense came back later in the game to trouble the Mules. Tyler Hooven was solid at the plate for Bedford picking up 4 hits on the day and reaching base 5 times. Also contributing on offense were Zach Mills, Alex Flores, and Tyler Hafner. The Mules rallied in the bottom of the 7th inning; however, were unable to get men in from 2nd and 3rd. Bedford 5 Adrian Game Summary: The Mules made several key plays throughout the first three innings on defense to keep the Maples from scoring, including several close plays at the plate. However, pitch location was yet again an issue in the 4 th inning as the Mules walked 4 straight batters. Tyler Hafner came in with the bases loaded and was able to get the Maples to ground into a double play to end the 4 th. Bedford trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 5 th and chipped away to earn a tie with Adrian as the game was called after 6 innings due to darkness. Tyler Hafner, Justin McPherson, Alex Flores, and Tyler Hooven all had key hits in the bottom of the 6 th to help rally the Mules. 4-25-09 Bedford 10 Trenton 3 Game Summary: Alex Flores had Trenton off balance to start the game, pitching 4 solid innings, earning his 3 rd win on the year. In 13 innings Alex has yet to give up an earned run. On the day he fell behind very few hitters, taking command early in the count. Adam Glenn made a nice play in center field, throwing out a runner, as the Mules overall played well defensively. Zach Kitzmiller reached base 3 times, scoring 3 runs. Bemister, Hafner, Mills, and Miller all drove in runs on the day. The Mules were solid in the 4 th inning as the game was broken open, sending 10 men to the plate, while scoring 5 runs. Bedford 7 Airport 9 Game Summary: The Mules fought hard throughout the game; however, were not able to overcome shaky play on defense. Bedford got off to a fast start scoring 2 runs in the first inning off of 3 hits. Tyler Liebnau had the key hit in the inning, driving in two runs with two strikes on a ball to right field. Zach Kitzmiller was solid at the plate, picking up a single and a triple. Tyler Hooven and Alex Flores each had 2 hits in the game, while each scoring a run. However, the Mules were unable to plate runners in scoring position in 4 different innings, coming up just short in the end. 4-27-09 Bedford 6 AA Huron 3 Tyler Liebnau pitched the complete game earning the win. He allowed just 2 hits over 5 innings, earning his first win on the year. Tyler Hooven played well in center field, picking up an outfield assist in the 3 rd inning. The Mules trailed 3-2 heading into the last inning and rallied to score 4 runs on 5 hits. Tyler Hooven, Tyler Hafner, Derek Miller, Nick Kledzik, and Zach Mills all had solid at bats, each recording a hit in the last inning, to propel the Mules. Bedford 11 AA Huron 3 Adam Glenn threw 4 innings of no hit baseball, in earning his first win of the year, in his first appearance. Mitch Kelly played well in right field, making several nice plays defensively. The Mules were balanced offensively, scoring in the first 4 innings. Joe Bemister went 2-3 at the plate, scoring 2 runs. Glenn helped his cause by reaching base 3 times and scoring 2 runs. Zach Mills, Derek Miller, and Aaron Czesak all had good games at the plate, each reaching base 3 times. 5-1-09 Bedford 6 AA Pioneer 2 Zach Mills pitched very well in earning the win for the Mules, who played one of their best games of the year. He had the Pioneers off balance in his 5 innings on the mound, striking out 7 batters. He allowed just 3 base runners in his 5 innings, as the Mules were solid defensively. Tyler Hafner came in to close the game out in the 6 th and 7 th inning pitching well and getting out of a couple of binds. Tyler Hooven went 2-4 in the game, scoring 2 runs. Mills helped his cause reaching base 3 times, registering 2 hits on the day. Adam Glenn also picked up a pair of hits, including a great at bat in the 3 rd inning. Derek Miller played well defensively and was solid at the plate before coming out due to injury. Devin Garcia picked up a couple of hits as well, as the Mules (from top to bottom) took a great approach to the plate all game. Bedford 12 AA Pioneer 2 Justin McPherson pitched very well, going 5 strong innings earning the win. He had the Pioneers off balance for the second game, striking out 7 batters on the day. Again the Mules were solid defensively, turning a double play and throwing a couple of runners out. The Mules again took a great approach to the plate, often staying ahead in the count. Zach Mills had a key double in the 2 nd inning that plated a couple of runners. Joe Bemister picked up 3 walks on the day, scoring 1 run. Aaron Czesak had a nice day at the plate, scoring a couple of runs and driving in one. Alex Flores was solid at the plate, scoring a couple of runs and driving in 1. Devin Garcia continued his great play at the plate picking up a single and a triple (which ended the game), while driving in 3 runs. 5-4-09 Bedford 11 Tecumseh 5 The Mules got off to a rough start, falling behind 3-0 after the top of the first inning. However, they battled back and heading into the 3 rd inning had a 4-3 lead. After a rough 1 st inning, Devin Garcia picked it up from the mound going 4 innings in his first outing of the year in earning the win. Zach Kitzmiller helped power the Mules early on picking up a single and a double in the 1 st and 2 nd innings, while scoring 2 runs. The Mules picked off two base runners at 1 st base and also threw out a runner at 2 nd base. The Mules busted open the game in the bottom of the 4 th inning, with the first 6 batters reaching base. Kitzmiller, Zach Mills, Justin McPherson, and Devin Garcia all earned hits in the inning, as the team plated 3 runs. Again in the 6 th and the 7 th the Mules were solid at the plate earning 3 singles, 2 doubles, and a triple. Tyler Hafner picked up 2 hits in the last two innings. Nick Kledzik came into the game in the 5 th-7 th innings in helping the Mules close out the Indians in game 1. Bedford 3 Tecumseh 4 Again the Mules got off to a rough start, falling behind 3-0 after the top of the 1 st inning as Tecumseh batted through their lineup. Over the next 6 innings the Mules used timely defense and solid pitching by Aaron Czesak to get out of bases loaded situations in 3 innings, while only surrendering 1 extra run. However, the sacrifice fly by Tecumseh in the 5 th turned out to be the winning run in the game as the Indians scored on a very close play at the plate that could have gone either way. The Mules were able to reach base 16 times throughout the game; however, were only able to plate 3 of those runners. Joe Bemister reached base 3 times throughout the game, picking up a single and a double. Alex Flores also had a solid game at the plate picking up a pair of singles. Nick Kledzik used great patience at the plate in picking up 3 walks (with each at bat consisting of 6 pitches). Adam Glenn and Tyler Hooven each drove in a run. 5-11-09 Bedford 8 Dexter 2 Game Summary: Joe Bemister went 6 strong innings in picking up the win in the first game for the Mules. Tyler Liebnau came in and shut Dexter down in the 7 th inning helping secure the win. Zach Mills played well behind the plate, while also throwing out a runner at 2 nd base. The game was tight throughout until the Mules busted things open with a huge 6 th inning where they scored 6 runs as 7 guys reached base in the inning. Tyler Hooven picked up two hits in the game while scoring a run. Joe Bemister helped his cause picking up a couple of hits in the game while scoring a run. Nick Kledzik was solid at the plate reaching base 4 times. Bedford 12 Dexter 6 Game Summary: The Mules did not waste any time in getting off to a quick start, sending 12 guys to the plate while scoring 8 runs in the first inning. Justin McPherson, Aaron Czesak, Nick Kledzik, Mitch Kelly, and Tyler Hooven picked up hits in the inning, as 9 guys reached base. The Mules then followed that up with a great 2 nd inning, where 9 guys came to the plate, scoring 4 runs. Tyler Liebnau and Nick Kledzik had key hits in the inning, each driving in a run. Tyler Hooven was solid at the plate, picking up 2 hits on the day (1 triple). Justin McPherson continued his solid play at the plate picking up 3 hits. Aaron Czesak pitched well, going 4 innings in earning the win. Mitch Kelly helped close the final 2 innings out, pitching for the first time this year. He gave up 0 earned runs, struck 2 batters out, and got Dexter to ground into a double play. 5-14-09 Bedford 18 Chelsea 16 The Mules wasted no time in getting off to a great start in the first game. The Mules plated 7 runs over the first 3 innings as Tyler Hafner was strong through the first 3 innings. He faced the minimum of 9 batters over the first three innings. An inability to throw strikes and an error in the field cost the Mules in the 4 th as the Bulldogs scored 6 runs to bring the game to within 1 run. Moving into the 5 th inning Bedford held an 8-6 lead; however, a rough 5 th and 6 th inning for the Mules found them trailing 16-8 heading into the bottom of the 6 th. Tyler Liebnau started the Mules off in the 6 th inning and they proceeded to reach base in 11 straight at bats as they rallied back to take an 18-16 lead. Nick Kledzik finished the game off in earning the win. On the game the Mules reached base 29 times. Tyler Hooven was solid at the top of the lineup, reaching base 4 times while driving in 3 runs. Derek Miller was solid at the plate, reaching base 4 times, picking up 2 hits, while driving in 3 runs as well. Joe Bemister continued his success at the plate, reaching base 5 times while recording 2 hits and driving in 2 runs. Zach Kitzmiller was solid in 2 at bats late in the game reaching base 2 times, picking up a double, and driving in 2 runs. Bedford 13 Chelsea 2 The Mules carried over their momentum from an exciting first game, getting off to a quick start scoring 8 runs in the bottom of the first. Tyler Hooven led the inning off with a double, Zach Mills picked up a triple, and Nick Kledzik earned a single as the Mules sent 12 men to the plate. Kledzik picked up where he left off in the first game pitching 4 solid innings in earning the win. In 4 innings at the plate the Mules reached base 23 times. Tyler Hooven again led the charge from the leadoff spot, reaching base in all three of his at bats. Tyler Hafner used patience at the plate in picking up 3 walks and was solid on the base-paths stealing 4 bases in the game. Zach Mills picked up a triple, reached base 3 total times, scored on all of his at bats, and drove in 3 runs. Mitch Kelly played well in the game, making several nice plays in the field, while reaching base in all three of his at bats. He also picked up an RBI in the game. Derek Miller came in to pitch the 5 th inning, his first appearance on the season, and retired the first three batters of the inning and last batters of the game. 5-18-09 Bedford 9 Saline 4 Facing the 18-2 Saline Hornets, the Mules played one of their best games of the year. Zach Mills pitched well going 6 strong innings in earning the win. He struck out 6 batters and gave up 3 runs to the Hornets on the day. Tyler Liebnau pitched the 7 th inning and ended the game with a double play ball. Nick Kledzik had one of his best games of the year behind the plate in helping the Mules earn the victory. Tyler Hooven was solid from the leadoff position going 3-5, with 2 singles, 1 double, a stolen base, and an RBI. Derek Miller reached base 3 times in the game and scored all 3 times. Joe Bemister continued his great success at the plate going 3-3 with 2 singles, 1 double, 1 walk, 2 runs scored, and 3 runs driven in. Justin McPherson batted cleanup and went 2-3 with 1 single, 1 double, 1 run scored, and 2 runs driven in. Devin Garcia was able to get things going in the middle of the lineup reaching base in his first three plate appearances. Garcia also used great speed and a solid jump in stealing home in the 2 nd inning to build some momentum for the Mules. The Mules pulled it together defensively in several innings, keeping men in scoring position from scoring in the 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, 5 th, and 6 th innings. Bedford 7 Saline 5 Aaron Czesak pitched well for the Mules, going 4 and 2/3 innings in earning the win. He gave up 3 runs and struck out 6 Hornets. Again the Mules used solid defense to squander the Hornets scoring chances in the 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, and 5 th innings. Justin McPherson came into the game in the 7 th inning and was able to shut down the Hornets rally in helping to secure the win. At the plate the Mules used small ball and great, patient at bats to beat the Hornets, only picking up 5 hits in the second game. The Mules found themselves trailing 3-2 in the 5 th inning and found a way to plate 5 runs, breaking open the game a little bit. Derek Miller reached base via a walk and later scored. He was followed by singles from Bemister and McPherson. Kledzik, Czesak, and Kitzmiller also reached base later in the inning, as the Mules batted through their lineup. Tyler Liebnau and Zach Kitzmiller played solid defense for the Mules on the day as they improved to 18-3-1 on the year. 5-19-09 Bedford 10 skyline 0 In the last set of games on the year for the Mules, they struggled in the first couple of innings of the game. With bases loaded in the bottom of the first and no outs, the Mules were unable to plate any runners, as Skyline turned a double play to end the inning. Zach Kitzmiller pitching in just his second game on the year, was very solid in holding Skyline to 0 runs in the 5 inning game. He struck out 4 batters and had them off balance much of the game, pounding the bottom of the strike zone, while also forcing Skyline to pop out 8 times. The Mules stranded Skyline at 3 rd in the top of the first inning. Aaron Czesak had an outfield assist in the top of the 5 th inning that kept the shutout intact. At the plate, the Mules used a huge 3 rd inning in which 11 guys came to bat, scoring 7 runs. Zach Mills led the inning off with a double (going 1-2 on the day) and was followed by a single by Kitzmiller (2-3 on the day). Justin McPherson, Devin Garcia, Aaron Czesak, and Tyler Liebnau also added hits in the inning, and all eventually scored. In the game overall the Mules had 10 hits and held Skyline to just 2 hits. With the win the Mules improved to 19-3-1 on the year. Bedford 10 Skyline 5 Again the Mules got off to a sluggish start in the second game and this time it showed on the scoreboard as they fell behind 5-0 after the top of the 1 st inning. Derek Miller was the starting pitcher and even though he struggled in the first inning, he came back in the 2 nd through 6 th innings and pitched extremely well. Over the next 5 innings he faced the minimum 15 batters, giving up 0 runs, and just 1 hit. He struck out 6 batters on the day and really located his pitches well after a shaky start. Nick Kledzik was solid behind the plate, throwing out a pair of runners in the game. After working behind the plate, Kledzik came out to finish off the game from the mound, going 1-2-3 in the 7 th inning. Kledzik also had a great game at the plate, going 2-3 with a single, double, walk, run scored, RBI, and a stolen base. Justin McPherson continued his great play at the plate going 2-3 with a single, double, walk, stolen base, and a run scored. Aaron Czesak was solid at the plate as well picking up a pair of singles, while scoring a run. Mitch Kelly, having one of his best sets of games on the year, picked up a pair of singles and drove in a run, also playing well in the field. These wins helped the Mules to wrap up an undefeated season in the SEC Red and also earned them the SEC Championship. |
