Latos Homers, Pitches Gem

In what is being called the biggest series to this point, Mat Latos and the Cincinnati Reds responded to the sold-out crowd by winning the first of three against the Pirates Friday night by a final score of 3-0.

The Reds got their first run on a very rare inside-the-park home run by Chris Heisey. This is not the first time this has happened in Heisey's career. It was one year and a day ago to the day Friday, that Heisey did it off these same Pittsburgh Pirates. Only that time he did off the Pirates' closer, Joel Hanrahan. This is also the second time this year the Reds have had an inside the park home run. Jay Bruce did it in New York against the Mets on June 15th against Dillion Gee.

But the Reds were not just satisfied with just one run. In the bottom of the fifth inning, it was Mat Latos who took the first pitch delivered by newly-acquired Pirate, Wandy Rodriguez, out to deep left center, and put it over the wall for a two-run home run. This was Latos' third career home run.

On top Latos' home run he pitched a very nice game too. Latos went seven and a third innings, scattered four hits, walking three and struckout five. He wiggled out of a tight spot when he walked Neil Walker and Rod Barajas with one out, but was able to induce a ground ball double play by Clint Barmes to end the inning.

It was then Jonathon Broxton time in the eighth inning after Latos got one out, and he slammed the door in the eighth by inducing another ground ball double play. It was then up to Aroldis Chapman, and he did what he always does, and that's strike people out (he struck out two) to pick up his 24th save of the year.

That's all for me, folks. Glad the Reds came out fired up and ready to go in the first game of three. They played good baseball and were able to push their lead over the Pirates to four and a half games. Are you all feeling good about it yet? Are Reds' fans in Louisville starting to feel it yet? (I don't know I don't live down there. Someone tell me). You can find me on twitter @stieneKYSCO .
