UofL's Benavides and UK's Smith Make Rimington Trophy Fall Watch List

The University of Louisville's Mario Benavides and Kentucky's Matt Smith were both named to the Rimington Trophy Fall Watch List. The Rimington Trophy goes to the Nations best center at the end of the year. There are 51 players on the watch list. This is the third straight season that Benavides has been selected to the watch list, this is Smith's 2nd consecutive year being on the watch list.

Benavides, a three-year starter at center for the Cardinals, has been the anchor of the offensive line. A native of Los Fresnos, Texas, Benavides has started 34 of 38 games during his career, missing four contests due to injury. He missed the entire spring due to injury, but is back working out and running with the team during summer conditioning.

A native of Louisville, Ky., Smith has been a key part of Kentucky’s offensive line the past three seasons, playing in 29 career games with 22 starts. In 2011, Smith missed the first two games of the season due to injury but bounced back strong with nine starts to end the season. Two years ago, Smith helped anchor UK’s offensive line unit that ranked in the top 25 in the nation in fewest quarterback sacks allowed.
