Jeff Walz and the Lady Cards will be hosting a skills elite camp Thursday from 1-5 p.m. at Cardinal Arena. According to Jody Demling of the Courier Journal there be lots of talent there, but none more talented than 2013 recruit Mercedes Russell. Russell is ranked the best player in her class by ESPN.com. The 6'5 post player from Springfield, Oregon made an unofficial visit to Louisville last summer.

She is being recruited by the USC Trojans, Georgia Lady Bulldogs, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, LSU Lady Tigers, Duke Blue Devils, North Carolina Tar Heels, Baylor Lady Bears, Tennessee Lady Volunteers. ESPN.com says of her, "Russell plays a very mature game in the post and so few posts today actually perfect their craft around the basket before trying to add perimeter skills. Yes she's athletic and can run the floor and yes she even took a long rebound and started the break a couple of times, but what is exciting about her game is how technically skilled she is at getting position, receiving the ball and scoring in the paint. She does a great job of dropping her hips to maintain leverage and always gives her guards a target to pass to. She has good footwork after the catch and good touch around the rim."
