Kendrick Girls Win Region 1 - AA Tournament
October 23, 2013Kendrick High School
On Saturday Oct 13th The Kendrick Lady defeated Spencer HS in three straight sets to capture the Region 1 - AA title.
A long time power in girls basketball, Kendrick (21-1) has steadily turned itself into a contender in volleyball as well. Despite the improvement, the team has been stuck in the second round the past three seasons.
Coach Sterling Hicks said the goal is to change that this year.
With only one loss, coming Oct. 3 to Lee County, the team appears as good as ever. Hicks said that loss, though, reminded his team not to take opponents for granted, especially not in the playoffs.
“We don’t have time to sleepwalk through it,” he said, before praising his girls’ abilities to remain consistent all year. “They’ve been humble. The realize there are better teams as we go on, so they’re bracing for whatever comes their way.”
Today the ladies defeated Johnson-Augusta in three straight sets:
25 - 3
25 - 14
25 - 7
KHS will host its second-round match, against Chatooga at 5 p.m. next Tuesday at home.
The Lady Cherokees were led by Kahlia Lawrence’s 11 kills and Ashunti Jack’s 12 assists. Melia Jones had 7 assists and 1 kill, and Taylor Farley had 8 kills.
