Home » General NewsKendrick SkillsUSA squad Excels at Nationals Once AgainDecember 8, 2009 Kendrick High SchoolLaketa Lewis, Melody Johnson, and Zia Green from Kendrick High School placed 5th in Tech Prep Showcase. All of these students also earned a Skill Point Certificate. A pinnacle achievement for SkillsUSA members as part of the new Work Force Ready System is the awarding of Skill Point Certificates. Earning a Skill Point Certificate is a significant achievement that documents a student's knowledge and hands-on abilities within a certain area. This criterion is developed and endorsed by industry representatives. Their project was the Tech Step Career Academy that was held for 8th graders at East Columbus Magnet Academy. The students got a taste of high school for four weeks, while SkillsUSA members taught graphic communications skills to the group of eighth graders. Industry speakers from PIAG members, Columbus Productions. Melody is now attending Georgia Southwestern State University and Laketa is attending Savannah State University. Junior, Zia Green was elected National Region II Vice President for SkillsUSA. Zia is the first national officer from Kendrick High School and the second in Muscogee County. She spent her last 10 days of summer in Washington at the national headquarters training to be a leader. Many thanks to Anthony Mitchell, Jarrett Williams, Keonte Williams, Tanesha McArthur, Chauntelle Robinson, Marquise Westbrook and Tiera Farley for all their hard work on Zia's campaign. Tanesha McArthur received the Gold Level President's Volunteer Service Award from President Obama. To qualify, you must have 250 hours of volunteer service. Tanesha logged 650 hours at the Spirit Filled Academy. The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and encourage more people to serve. The Council created the President's Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. Tanesha received an official lapel pin, personalized certificate of achievement, and a congratulatory letter from the president.
