Indians lose to Coronado 55-48 on Overtime
February 27, 2014By Randall Durant of Keller High School Basketball
The Keller Indians trip to the regional Quarterfinals anded with a heartbreaking 55-48 loss to Lubbock Coronado in Abilene Tuesday night. All that stood between Keller and a regional tournament berth was a free throw or 4 seconds. The free throw didn't go and 4 seconds was long enough for Coronado to hit a shot just inside halfcourt to send the game to overtime. From there Lubbock took control and the Indians season came to an end. It was a heartbreaking loss as Keller had battled from an early deficit to take a 9 point lead midway through the 4th quarter. The Indians played most of the game without Nolan Taylor as he was plagued with foul trouble. In his place Erik Frederiksen and Ryan Feifer battled inside for the Indians.
It started off a bit shaky for Keller as they got down 7-0, then came back as Brock Anders hit 2 threes to tie it at 21-21 at the half. Keller inched ahead after the third 35-30 as RJ Nembhard got to the rim. Keller led by 10 when Coronado guard Devonte Hutchins hit a pair of threes to give the Mustangs a bit of life. The Indians held them at bay, but poor free throw shooting (12-24) kept Coronado close. Then it came down to that final play in regulation as Hutchins hit nothing but net to send it to overtime. Crazy, bitter end for the Indians who finish the year at 24-6.
The Indians won the Arlington Martin Classic at Thanksgiving, and the Byron Nelson tournament at Christmas. Keller led the very competative district 4-5A from start to finish and won 2nd straight district title going 12-2.
