Indians scalp the Rebels

January 13, 2013
By Randall Durant of Keller High School Basketball

The Keller Indians passed a big test Friday night as they defeated #20 ranked Richland and take sole possesion of the 4-5A lead. Richland came in 4-0 in district play and the  overwhelming favorite to win the district title. Keller had a little momentum of their own as they were also 4-0 in district play. Richland's Oklahoma State signee, 6'8 Layton Hammonds, and 6'8 Tim Priller made a formidible front line. The Indians countererd with 6'4 Blake Stewart, 6'4 freshmen Nolan Taylor, and 6'2 Mike Opolski. Those three proved up to the challenge as Keller socred the majority of its points in the paint. Taylor battled and played more like a senior than a freshmen with 6 points and 8 rebounds. Stewart had perhaps his best overall game of the year (4-4 from 2 pt., 3-3 from ft, 7 rebounds) and Opolski  ( 11 pts. 10 assists, 5 rebounds)was fearless as usual. Opolski and Stewart combined for 15 first half points as Keller led 26-23 at the half. Richland came out strong in the third and led 36-35 after 3 quarters. Richland looked like they were about to take control in the 4th with a 5 point lead and 2 minutes left, but Keller's defensive group of  Opolski, Stewart, Alec Ingraham, Kyle Tanner, and Brock Anders did a great job of applying pressure and getting key turnovers. Tanner hit a three pointer to cut it to 2 points. In the last minute Mike Opolski got the steal and found Anders running to the rim. Anders made the layup and got fouled. His free throw gave Keller the lead 45-44. One more defensive stop, then Austyn Kennedy hit 2 free throws to seal the win.

Opolski had 11, Stewart 11, Taylor 6, Kennedy 5, Tanner 5, Brock Anders 5, and Alec Ingraham 4. It was great team effort on both the ends of the floor that allowed the Indians to improve to 15-8, and 5-0 and take possession of first place.

The Keller JV won their 20th game and stayed unbeaten in district play as well with a 58-42 win over the Rebels. After trailing 15-9 after one quarter, the JV won the next three and made 17-22 free throws in downing the Rebels. Blake Nelson  had 24 points, Alec Byrnes 8, Quinn Shoop 7, Kevin Downey 7, Ryan Feifer 4, Conner Estes 2, Christian Guillory 2, Matt Murphy 2, and Grant Giunta 2.

The Freshmen A team also beat Richland 62-34. Paul Brewer had 9, Keiran Rye 9, Layton O'Neal 8, Ben Bahr 8, Austin Reynolds 7, Austin McGee 7, Anthony Savera 7, Landon Rowlett 5, Tyler Tutt 2, the A team is now 14-6 on the year and 4-1 in district play.
