Drug Awareness Program

October 12, 2009
By Randall Durant of Keller High School

Parents as you know we require you to go on line and complete a drug awareness presentation. Instructions can be found on our homepage on the right hand side. I suggest you sit down WITH YOUR SON and complete this. I would ask them questions about what they know and see at school.
You may not know that our district now has a voluntary drug testing program. In other words you can have your son put in a pool to be randomly drug tested. I KNOW!!! It sounds like you don't trust them-that's not the point. The truth is they know more than they tell you, and more goes on than you or I know. Here is the REAL point. You have great kids who for the most part make good decisions. What a great example they could be.
I won't know who does or doesn't sign up, that is confidental. I hope 100% of you sign up and don't keep it confidental. I hope you and your kids stand up and tell everybody that will listen that our basketball program all signed up to be tested. Why not?? If we truly believe that not taking drugs is the right thing then why don't we act on it and show others?
It has been 13 months since my nephew passed away from a drug overdose. His supposed friends were too high to notice he was dying. If some "clean" kids would stand up and be counted maybe others would follow suit. Who knows, it might just save a life.
Once again, I think we have great kids that make good decisions, so lets stand up and be counted. If you want more info. please let me know. Look under documents on the left for voluntary document and board policy document.
