This was close. The Kearney girls cross country team stepped up to face some more Class 4 competition in the Wildcat Invitational Saturday. The meet was hosted by Blue Springs at Lake Jacomo.

The Bulldogs came in with a one, two finish as freshman Ashley Coonfield covered the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 6.09 seconds.

Right on her heels was sophomore Olivia Franklin at 20:10.72.

After that it was Lee's Summit North and Kearney mixing it up. The Bulldogs would end up with juniors Jessi Allen and Maiya Wolpert taking 8th and 10 places, respectively. Freshmen Sydney McIntire would finish 15th to round out the Bulldogs' scoring.

Kearney totaled 36 points. Lee's Summit North used a huge pack and finished third, fifth, seventh, ninth, and 12th to also total 36 points.

It then went to the sixth runner from each team to break the tie. North's Mandi Murphy took 16th to Kearney's senior Jessica Breyfogle's 24th. That gave North the team title.

The Kearney boys finished in fifth place as a team. Junior Sam Oxandale led the way with an eighth place finish in 17:17.02.

Senior Aaron Stephens also medaled for the Dogs with 17:56.59 for 24th.

Up next for the Dogs is Rim Rock on Saturday. The junior varsity is scheduled to run at the Smithville Invitational on Tuesday.
