John Curtis opened defense of its 2012 consensus national championship Friday night with a hard-fought 24-13 win over a talented Bergen Catholic team from Oradell, NJ., in front of a national TV audience on Fox Sports 1. The game was part of the Inaugural Under Armour Brothers in Arms Classic, played at Joe Yenni Stadium in Metairie, LA.
It’s only the beginning for Curtis, who plays highly regarded St. Thomas Aquinas of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, in the second game of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Classic in the Superdome next Friday at 8:30 p.m.
The Patriots rolled to a 24-7 lead by halftime, then withstood a determined bid by the visitors, limiting them to six points after the break. Curtis stretched its winning streak to 29 games, dating back to the opening game of the 2011 season. It was the 521st career victory for Head Coach J. T. Curtis as he began his 45th season.
Curtis served notice in the first minute of play. On the second snap of the game, running back George Moriera raced around the left side of the Crusader defense and set sail down the sidelines on an 87-yard scoring scamper.
Bergen Catholic followed with a sustained scoring drive, but Curtis quickly struck back with three unanswered scores. Quarterback Abby Touzet bulled his way behind his offensive line for nine yards and a score to put the Patriots ahead for good, 14-7, finishing an 81-yard drive.
Raekwon James’ electrifying run of 50 yards down the left sideline took the ball inside the one-yard line in the second quarter.. Moriera took it in from there to make it 21-7. Austin Linden added the PAT after all three Curtis TDs, then booted a 36-yard field goal in the late seconds of the half. The four Curtis scoring drives covered 301 yards.
