Home » Cross Country NewsPatriot cross country teams look to improve on recent successAugust 19, 2012 By Preston Curtis of John Curtis Christian High SchoolLast year the cross country team took a big step on both the boys and the girls sides, setting the pace for what should be a breakout year for the Patriots. At the state championship last fall the young squads placed 8th in the race, and improvement of five spots from the previous year, and girls team placed 9th in their first year as a team ever! The boys team, looking to repeat as district champions this year, are led by senior Dustin Kinard who qualified for both the indoor and outdoor state track meets last year in the 800 meter run. Other Patriots leading the way on the boys team are Devyn Keith, Christian Paz, Matthew Feehan, and Austin Brown, who all competed for Curtis in last years state track meets. The girls team, in their second year, is looking to improve on their placing last year and are equally as talented as the boys squad. Top returners from last years cross country team include Ashley Wingerter, Jenna Bordelon, Darianne Horton, and Logan Melancon. Rising 6th grader Hannah Ivory should also help improve this teams chance of winning a district title this year, an honor they fell one spot short of last year. Coach Preston Curtis and coach Chaz Caiado are both equally excited for what the year holds in store, and about the potential of these two talanted programs. If you are a student it is not too late to help the team out; new athletes are encouraged to join when school starts.
