67-9 Mater Dei wins (#3 ranked team in the state)
Jeff finishes season as HHC Champs, Sectional Champs and a 21-10 record...tenth straight winning dual meet season.
Mater Dei has now won 15 of the last 17 regional titles, 12 of the last 17 state titles, wrestling them before individual regionals is a gift. It is a great measuring stick to see where we need to be and what we need to do in the next days to prepare for semi-state.
The kids wrestled great. I know the score is lopsided, but I couldn't be happier with the kids effort. We want to continue that style of wrestling through regionals. We were aggressive, we were trying to scored, and we wrestled without fear of losing. Mater Dei is a great team, #3 in the state, it is a great test for regionals, it will get our kids wrestling at a higher level in regionals, and gives us a better look at a bar for semi-state to hurdle. Curtley lost by fall to Mauer the first time, by decision the second time, and now the score went to triple over time. He has greatly improved this match and will probably meet Mauer one more time this season at the semi-finals of semi-state or in the finals. Curtley is now 28-4 on the season (24 pins). Three of his losses are to the same kid, and his other loss was my doing when I bumped him up to 220 to wrestle an undefeated kid. He has had a great season. Alonzo Shepherd ran his record 42-3 on the season with all of his lossess at a different weight class, he is undefeated since bumping up to 120 from 113 and is wrestling MUCH better up a weight. I didn't think it was going to be good at him, but he looks fresh now, he looks motivated now, he looks explosive now, and he has his fire back. Going up was his choice, and it was a great choice for him. The kids looked good tonight, I am happy and proud of how they have progressed through the season, they are ready for regionals this weekend.
