October 1, 2012
By Patrick Mullowney of Jamestown Senior High School

The Jamestown Bluejays boys tennis team competed at the WDA tourney in Bismarck Sep 27-29, 2012.  The Jays opened team competition on Sep 27 with a 5-0 loss to Century.  On the consolation side, 2nd round, Jamestown rebounded with a 4-1 win over Dickinson which placed the Bluejays in a state qualifying match against Bismarck High.  The Bluejays dropped the state qualifier to the Demons 4-1, with the lone Jays win at #3 singles by Ben Harris.  The Jays competed well overall as a team and gave Bismarck all they could handle in the qualifier by playing some solid tennis against a stong team (Bismarck ended up qualifying two singles players and both doubles teams for state).

Individual competition began Friday and continued into Saturday.  Competing in the singles bracket was Nick Watne, Declan O'Higgins and Ben Harris, while the doubles bracket featured the JHS teams of Braydon Love/Nate Soulis and Ashton Johnson/Nick Fuchs. Watne ended up 1-2 in the tourney as the #4 seed, losing a state qualifier to Ben Schaner of Mandan 6-1 7-5 in a hard fought match at Capital Racquet. O'Higgins also went 1-2, while Harris went 0-2.  Love/Soulis went 1-2, losing a state qualifying match to Klein/Foster of Minot 6-0 6-0.  Johnson and Fuchs went 0-2 in the tourney.
