Berea, Ky. (April 28th, 2014) - The Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference is proud to announce Player of the Week honors for April 21st -
April 27th in Baseball, Softball, Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and
Field, Men's Golf and Men's Tennis.



Alex Mateo, Point Park University - Baseball Pitcher of the Week

6-1 Sophomore - Miami, FL



Point Park University sophomore Alex Mateo was named the KIAC baseball
pitcher of the week by KIAC officials on Monday, April 27th. This is his
fourth pitcher of the week award of the season.



Mateo threw a 9 inning complete game in the KIAC Championship game only
allowing one run on six singles while striking out 4 IU Southeast batters.
Point Park won their second consecutive KIAC Tournament Championship. Mateo
currently has a 2.10 earned run average which leads the KIAC. He ranks 14th
nationally in total hits allowed (37) and 18th in opposing batting average
(.185).



Point Park University is 38-13 overall and 19-4 in conference play. They
will return to action at the NAIA National Championship Opening Round May
12-15 and will learn their destination May 9th when the bracket is released.





Tom Birko, Point Park University - Baseball Player of the Week

5-10 Senior - Kennedy Twp., PA



Point Park University senior Tom Birko was named the KIAC baseball player of
the week by KIAC officials on Monday, April 27th.



In three KIAC tournament games last week, Birko finished with a .538
(7-for-13) batting average. The senior second baseman recorded a double,
RBI, 3 walks and scored 4 runs. He had at least two hits in all three games.
Birko also became the all-time career hits leader for Point Park and now has
217 for his career. He is currently batting .350 to go along with 11 doubles
and 38 RBIs on the season.



Point Park University is 38-13 overall and 19-4 in conference play. They
will return to action at the NAIA National Championship Opening Round May
12-15 and will learn their destination May 9th when the bracket is released.





Joey Smart, Indiana University East - Men's Golfer of the Week

Junior - Brookville, IN



Indiana University East junior Joey Smart was named the KIAC men's golfer of
the week by KIAC officials on Monday, April 27th.



Indiana University East competed in the KIAC Championships at Gibson Bay
Golf Course in Richmond, KY. Smart finished eagle-birdie-par on the last
three holes of the final round to force sudden death. He then birdied both
holes to win the tournament. With his win, Smart become the first IU East
golfer to qualify for nationals. The NAIA Men's Golf National Championship
is scheduled for May 13-16 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, FL.



Jessica Leanhart, Indiana University Southeast - Softball Pitcher of the
Week

5-8 Freshman - Louisville, KY



Indiana University Southeast freshman Jessica Leanhart was named the KIAC
softball pitcher of the week by KIAC officials on Monday, April 27th. This
is her sixth pitcher of the week award of the season.



In four outings last week, Leanhart finished with a 4-0 record and 1.40
earned run average in 20 innings pitched. She threw 5 innings in all four
games and struck out 22 total batters while only walking 2 opposing batters.
She improved her record to 17-2 with a 2.15 ERA and has 106 strikeouts in
102 innings. She ranks 2nd in the KIAC with a 2.15 ERA, 2nd in opposing
batting average (.225) and leads the conference with 17 wins.



Indiana University Southeast is 37-10 overall and leads the conference with
a 25-3 record. They will return to action on April 29th when they host
Spalding University for a doubleheader.





Shelby Lucas, Indiana University Southeast - Softball Player of the Week

5-0 Freshman - Columbus, IN



Indiana University Southeast freshman Shelby Lucas was named the KIAC
softball player of the week by KIAC officials on Monday, April 27th. This is
her second player of the week award of the season.



Lucas finished the week with a .633 batting average (19-for-30) as the
Grenadiers ended the week with an 8-0 record. The freshman catcher tallied 5
triples, a double, 9 runs batted in and scored 10 run last week. She is
currently 4th in the KIAC in hitting (.439), 2nd in run scored (35), 7th in
RBIs (27), and 1st in triples (8).



Indiana University Southeast is 37-10 overall and leads the conference with
a 25-3 record. They will return to action on April 29th when they host

Jacob Thompson, Indiana University East - Men's Tennis Player of the Week

Freshman - Richmond, IN



Indiana University East freshman Jacob Thompson was named the KIAC men's
tennis player of the week by KIAC officials on Monday, April 27th.



Last week he was 2-1 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles play. He won his #4
singles match against Central State University 6-0, 6-0 and his doubles
match 8-0. He also won his #4 singles match against Berea 6-2, 6-1 and his
doubles match 9-8. Thompson finished his freshman year with a team best 8-6
singles record, setting a freshman record for singles wins in a season.





David Orr, Berea College - Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week

Junior - Robertsdale, AL



Berea College junior David Orr was named the KIAC men's outdoor field
athlete of the week by KIAC officials on Monday, April 27th. This is his
third field athlete of the week award of the season.



Berea College participated in the KIAC Conference Championships April 26th
at Berea College. He won the javelin event and increased his season best
with a mark of 63.32m. That mark places him 6th in the nation. He also
finished 3rd in the high jump, 3rd in the discus and 4th in the shot put.







John Willis, Berea College - Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week

Sophomore - Chicago, IL



Berea College sophomore John Willis was named the KIAC men's outdoor track
athlete of the week by KIAC officials on Monday, April 27th.



Berea College participated in the KIAC Conference Championships April 26th
at Berea College. The first year sprinter won the 100 meter dash with a time
of 11.08. He also anchored the winning 4x100 relay team who finished with a
time of 43.87 and finished 5th in the 200m event with a time of 23.28.



Simone Brown, Berea College - Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week

Freshman - Monee, IL



Berea College freshman Simone Brown was named the KIAC women's outdoor field
athlete of the week by KIAC officials on Monday, April 27th. This is her
third outdoor field athlete of the week award of the season.



Berea College participated in the KIAC Conference Championships April 26th
at Berea College. Simone broke the high jump record for the third time this
season, this time with a national qualifying jump of 1.65m. She is currently
tied for 12th in the nation in the event. She also won the long jump (4.61m)
and triple jump (10.23m). She was named the top female newcomer in the
conference.





Ami Callow, Berea College - Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week

Junior - Van Wert, OH



Berea College junior Ami Callow was named the KIAC women's outdoor track
athlete of the week by KIAC officials on Monday, April 27th.



Berea College participated in the KIAC Conference Championships April 26th
at Berea College. She won the 400m and broke the meet record with a time of
1:01.61. She anchored the 4x100m relay team that won with a season best mark
of 52.44. She also anchored the 4x400 relay that won and broke both the meet
and school record with a time of 4:10.02.
