HOBART, Ind. - The Indiana University East volleyball team concluded the Midwest Crossroads College Challenge with a 4-0 record after a pair of wins Sept. 1 at The Diggz of Northwest Indiana. NAIA No. 31 IU East (10-1) extended its winning streak to nine and became the second NAIA team in the nation to reach the 10-win mark this season. "Today our thought was '10' because we wanted to leave the tournament with a 10-1 record - and we did," said freshman middle hitter Sarah Gambrall (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian High School). "We're just going to keep getting better from here. A 10-1 record is not where we're going to stop." IU East started the day with a 25-11, 25-8, 25-22 win against Indiana University Northwest (0-9). The Red Wolves concluded the tournament with a 25-14, 25-9, 25-15 victory against Alverno College (0-4). IU East was the only team in the event to finish the weekend with a 4-0 record. Gambrall led IU East with 19 kills on Sept. 1. She also had a hand in six blocks. Junior setter Lindsay Kurz (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran High School) finished the day with 44 assists and five aces. Freshman middle hitter Morgan Steinbrunner (Rockford, Ohio/Parkway High School) had a hand in nine blocks. "Overall, a good weekend," said IU East coach Adam Stevenson. "It was good to see the players stay focused and finish a match strong when winning. "The mental errors are coming fewer and farther between. We had hardly any two- or three-point runs against us today. It was another nice weekend getaway before we head off to Pittsburgh."
The Red Wolves play a key Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match in Pittsburgh on Sept. 6 at Point Park University on the opening day of the Pioneers' Battle of the Boulevard. The IU East-Point Park match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
