WILBERFORCE, Ohio - The Red Wolves earned a 100 on this finals week exam.
The Indiana University East men's basketball team picked up the 100th win in the
program's NAIA history with a 100-75 victory at Wilberforce University on Dec. 11.
IU East is now 100-64 in five-plus NAIA seasons, including a 7-4 record this year.
Wilberforce fell to 4-11.
"We scored 100 points in our 100th win," IU East coach Mark Hester noted. "It is
just a number, but it does give you pause to talk about those guys who contributed
to those 100 wins and all they did for us over the years. There’s a lot to be said
for that, especially with all of the obstacles we’ve had to overcome.”
The Red Wolves held the Bulldogs without a field goal over the last 12 minutes of
the first half, resulting in a 51-20 IU East lead at the break.
It was both a new-look and new-sound Red Wolves team. IU East had constant chatter
at the defensive end of the floor. The louder and more often the Red Wolves talked,
the better they seemed to play.
"Talking affects how the other team plays, talking intimidates, and talking results
in big-time success," Hester said.
Sophomore guard Brandon Muncie (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North High School)
scored 14 points to lead five IU East players in double figures.
Freshman forward Jason Ray (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville High School) added a
season-best 12. All 13 IU East players scored.
Darius Foster led Wilberforce with 23 points - two below his average. Foster entered
the game ranked third in the NAIA Division II in points per game.
IU East hosts Goshen College on Dec. 18 at the Richmond High School Tiernan Center
in the Red Wolves' "Holiday Night." Tipoff time is 7 p.m.
Fans who bring a new toy to donate to Toys For Tots will be admitted for free. Santa
Claus will be in attendance and will be available for photos. A paper airplane
throwing contest will be held at halftime.
