THEIR DEFINING MOMENT IS HERE

Troy Derengowski

There are times in an athlete’s career that defines him or her.  It can happen in high school, college and in the professional ranks.  For some lucky enough, it occurs at all three levels.   No matter what the moment may be, it is never easy getting there.  The hard work, hours of preparation, sacrifice, sweat and many times tears, all come into the equation and yet it still may not happen.   For the IU East Volleyball team, that defining moment is now here for three seniors.

I spent some time talking with Breezy Strete, Lauren Crump and Kristian Waechter on Wednesday night at the Tiernan Center as they prepared for their first round match against Bryan Saturday.  You get the feeling all three know this is the defining moment in their careers.  All the regular season wins, the conference championships, the individual awards and records won’t mean as much if they don’t get to Iowa to prove they belong with the “big boys”.

IU East volleyball has come a long way in a short amount of time and most of that success has been because of Charlie and Londa Brown and those three seniors.   Charlie and Londa took a fledgling program that not many other coaches would touch and transformed it into one of the top programs in the country.  Charlie sold a program that had no home gym, very little recruiting money and no reputation to Strete, Crump and Waechter and they bought in.  That isn’t an easy thing to do but Charlie believed in what he was doing, they believed in him and the rest is history.

Now four years later and several near misses, the Red Wolves are in a position the three seniors will never get again, a trip to Iowa.  I have been around athletes for many years and I can’t remember a more deserving group than this one taking that next step.  You can see it in their eyes, you can hear it in their voices and you can see it in their preparation.  They don’t want this opportunity to escape because they know there is no tomorrow to prove they belong.

There is one more step Saturday against Bryan, a team no one expected to be here.  They will have nothing to lose because IU East is favored to win.  But I have seen way too many upsets over the years to think about Iowa yet.  My advice to the three seniors is enjoy this moment, cherish every minute you have to play but take care of business Saturday and then anything can happen.   Let your actions on the floor Saturday be the start of that defining moment in your careers and then as Rihanna says, “Shine Bright Like a Diamond” in Iowa!
